cat /proc/asound/cards

and
aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav

Did you look in control-centre under hardware soundsystem ,if anything is muted?

I opened an MP3 with xmms but it would not produce the sound, just the visual display.

The sound is back.

I went to control center>adjust mixer. Some of the items were a zero so I turned them all up. Now everything works.
I don’t know why they would suddenly be turned down. Any ideas?

Do you think it would be OK to install pulseaudio so FF Quantum would have sound or could that have been the problem? I can live without Quantum if its a problem. I think with version 60, they are going to have the sound problem fixed for linux. What do you think?

Audio in general is low on my list of priorities, so I’ve never learned its details. But I think that installing pulseaudio makes pulseaudio your default sound system. Open alsamixer and do f6 to see what’s running your audio. Probably it lists pulseaudio as your soundcard and chip as “default” (but you’ll have another listed under options). What happens for me is that pulseaudio takes over sound but doesn’t activate for Quantum unless I do “pulseaudio –start” in terminal. Outside Quantum my sound works fine. If I wanted to make Quantum my default browser I’d figure out how to start pulseaudio by default at boot. But I’m not committing to this, so I do the workaround each time I feel like playing with Quantum.

I was able to get pulseaudio to start at boot up. Go to control center>session>user desktop-session>startup tab, then add the following on the bottom line: pulseaudio &
