Hi,
Hope you don’t mind me posting my projects here… They are not antiX but they ARE built with the antiX/MX iso build script and MXDE features a pretty tricked up version of zzzFM which I first encountered here. I’m sure these are far too high cholesterol for you super lean antiXxers but in any case you can read about them in the Blog post here if there is any interest: http://www.bandshed.net/2022/04/18/avl-mxe-21-1-and-mxde-release-a-palooza/
Best, and happy antiXxing!

::That’s great news Glen, glad to see that AV Linux has done so well since you started using the antiX and MX build tools and getting assistance from people like anticapitalista.
Have you put out on any good new music recently?
If any antiX folks aren’t familiar with Glen’s musical stylings, here’s one of my favorite songs by his band Rated Blue called Mesmerized: https://piped.kavin.rocks/watch?v=znZl9aT7F8U
I call his band’s music an excellent mix of classic rock and prog rock, but Glen might categorize it differently. If anyone questions the professional audio credentials of AV Linux, to my knowledge Glen runs an entire professional recording studio (Bandshed Records) solely using AV Linux for the music production. AV Linux makes use of the Liquorix kernel to great effect to get low-latency audio performance, and has Jack and Pulseaudio integration completely figured out. AV Linux is a great example of showing off the wide capability of antiX’s underlying technologies.

Thanks for the morning laugh.See my belly, still overweight even after covid took away a lot of kilos.
AntiX uses the hardware better than anything else I found but my local setup has alot of
additions and experiments included not so lean but really mean…And yes AV linux is very interesting even for a far from pro like me with video from a
Chinese gopro challenger or Nikon D7000 to edit.
The most important thing being a user can get pretty decent results with a small investment
and working in dads garden shed or garage.Take care and many thanks for keeping us up to date,
@andyprough, those thanks also apply to you and for the inspiring work you do.- This reply was modified 1 year ago by ModdIt.

::hi, Glen
Some thoughts on the screen grab of MXDE available here: https://i0.wp.com/bandshed.net/images/screenshots/MXDE-64-Screenshot.png– It looks great, a mix of modern and retro – and can prehaps appeal to both Windows XP era users and folks comming from more mocern UI’s.
– You can’t go wrong with zzzfm – is lightness + features in an excelent package – if extremely low use of system resources is not your main goal, the video thumbnails is great (almost the single feature missing in antiX’s default zzzfm)
– Nice conky – modern and full of info
– The weather info on conky was a nice touch
– I like how everything is perfectly catalogued- the menu, the conky – no mess to confuse users!
– Has an welcome screen! Most people does not pay attention to those, but them can be a big help
– Has a nice quick setup window!My suggestions:
– Most people like a clock on the toolbar, I saw none (I know, conky has a clock, but you have to minimize all windows or move them out of the way to see it)
– The “hand written” font may be hard to read
– Conky has too much info that most people won’t probably need (details about CPU, etc – folks that do care about that, usually know how to find out that info)
– Most people expect a “search” field in the menu- even if the menu allows searching for apps without it…
– Does zzzfm have the “Default” Bookmarks?Real nice work!

::Hi,
Thanks for the comments and @PPC for the good advice!
@andyprough
Very nice to see you again, I had lost track of you and am glad to know you’re here. Thanks for the very kind comments about the music, that is very much appreciated!
Actually there has been a lot going on at the Studio, a new collaborative Blues and Roots album:

::Best wishes for AV Linux; the MX Linux implementation with AHS “seems” to be a pretty close cousin to your work. I really like it when various distributions really share many pieces with other distributions.
For me, I use different distributions, both out of curiosity and fun, and also for specific ‘use cases’.

::Thanks @Brian Masinick
Yes, more than ‘cousins’ really more like siblings. I used Debian with various 3rd party remastering apps from 2009-2020 and moved to MX in 2020 and haven’t looked back, AVL is now essentially a custom MX ahs build with a layer of my own performance tweaks, theming and customized Packages to focus it on Content Creation. Indeed it is phenomenal how much history and great stuff is shared between MX and antiX! XFCE4 without xfdesktop and with Openbox instead of xfwm seems to run for many users around 425Mb of RAM… certainly not in antiX territory but also significantly leaner than a full XFCE4 setup.

::I’m going to have to try out MXDE, that looks very cool Glen. It’s fantastic that you were able to use zzzFM and tailor it to your needs, and I’m glad that you gave a shout out to @skidoo in your blog post. I hope he’s recovering well and that we see him back here soon. I’m interested to see how much more useful you were able to make zzzFM – the additional udevil integration sounds very helpful.
Looks like you did make some new music too – Screaming Night Hog, I’m Her Daddy, Need Your Love So Bad, Vaguely New Orleans, and See the Moon Smiling – these are all new for me. I’ll be enjoying some new tunes while I work today – this is awesome!
EDIT: Your son plays some gorgeous guitar music, I had only seen him on drums before. That ‘See the Moon Smiling’ is beautiful – did he write it too?
EDIT2: I see he did write it, that’s impressive.- This reply was modified 1 year ago by andyprough.

::Completely off topic – even if it’s not my kind of music, I’ll have to take a listen to something called “Screaming Night Hog” 🙂
Edit- Listening as I edit this… :-0

::@AVLinux: (Glen): that’s reassuring to know; antiX, MEPIS, and Debian have been staple distributions for me. Between stability, familiarity and the choice of packages and applications I use, these distributions have worked well for nearly two decades, and longer than that for Debian.

::great work @AVLinux on MXDE-21 64-bit,
It works great on my quad core intel pc with 8gb ram. It took me a few minutes
to get the audio working with pulseaudio. With Firefox open and audacious playing
is about 1 GB ram usage according to conky.April 25, 2022 at 12:51 am #82044Anonymous
::the 5.16 kernel is too much for this aging motherboard though.
going back to the 5.10. It’s an older Intel G-33 mobo.May 1, 2022 at 12:12 am #82384Member

::Thanks @linuxdaddy!
Yes, default kernels are always a crapshoot, thankfully there are a lot to choose from for alternates. I’m working on an App search in the Openbox menu and some additional Adwaita-friendly Openbox themes for future releases. I’d also like to expand the zzzFM Custom actions further, glad to get some feedback, thanks!

::I noticed that the package installer lists the antiX kernels, but there is no antiX list
file for the repo.May 1, 2022 at 2:42 pm #82441Member

::MXDE is MX based, other than the optional antiX kernels that MX provides through MXPI it’s apparently not wise to mix antiX and MX Repos so the antiX repos are not included or enabled by default.
