      This is my first time to install linux distro to hard drive. And I found some problem that the backlight control in “Preferences” menu and “Fn button” is not working on Toshiba Satellite M200.

      The specs:

      And here’s some info

      $ ls /sys/class/backlight/
      acpi_video0 intel_backlight

      $ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/actual_brightness

      $ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

      $ cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/max_brightness
      3984375

      I already tried to change the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= to

      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”acpi_backlight=vendor”
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”acpi_osi=Linux”
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”acpi_backlight=vendor acpi_osi=Linux”
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”acpi_backlight=intel”
      GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”acpi_backlight=intel acpi_osi=Linux”

      but none of them are working, did I miss something ?

        this page describes a solution & mentions an additional step: editing (or creating, if absent) /etc/X11/xorg.conf
        https://techoverflow.net/2014/07/27/how-i-solved-my-toshiba-linux-backlight-issues/

        similarly, this reported solution (not for your exact M200 model) also mentions xorg.conf
        https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=195967

        this mentions a solution which specifies nomodeset in the grub line, in addition to acpi_backlight=vendor
        https://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-1321403.html

        specific to Fn keys, lookit post #19 in this archived topic:

          Over at the MX forum they have been making a new utility to set brightness.

          Based off of reports in this thread. There is a number of things to try in it.

            that new brightness-init script is for saving the state of the brightness control between boots, similar to the way the liveUSB system does it already.

            I see the OP has 2 backlight interfaces but only provided information for the intel_backlight.

            $ ls /sys/class/backlight/
            acpi_video0 intel_backlight

            so we need to figure out which one is driving your backlight. if the OP could post the same information for acpi_video0 backlight that was posted for intel_backlight, that would be great.

              here’s the acpi_video0

              $ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/actual_brightness
              0

              $ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness
              7

              $ cat /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/max_brightness
              7

                  When I add nomodeset in the grub line, the desktop won’t start. Still trying the other solution you post there.

                    Is it only for Xfce ?

                    no, its a sysV init script that doesn’t even require a desktop environment, similar to the way the live-USB system works. but it only works to save brightness values between boots, not to set the brightness on the fly.

                    please try

                    sudo echo 5 >/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/backlight

                    and see if brightness changes any.

                      and see if brightness changes any.

                      sudo echo 5 >/sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/backlight
                      bash: /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/backlight: Permission denied

                      but I use this command from https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2088043

                      echo 7 | sudo tee /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness

                      and it works.

                      btw yesterday after I shutdown my laptop the acpi_video0 folder is gone so I reinstall it again this morning. Why the acpi_video0 folder is gone ?

                          It is solved. Made a shell script from this blog.
