      When I run the Backlight Brightness program on antiX 19.4 I receive the message:

      backlight-brightness: No controller found

      I do NOT get this message when I run it on antiX 19.3 (just tried from USB today), nor do I see any issue on the antiX release that is in testing.
      I’ve tried to locate the differences but I see the same programs.
      I’m wondering if I have messed up something on my antiX 19.4 image, which is now up to the released version, plus software added since release.

      Moreover, I tried it today on another laptop; worked with the 19.3 instance and the same issue could be seen from the 19.4 instance.

      It could be that I am bringing a defect along with me (IF I am responsible for it, but I’ve been unable to locate a clear difference between the 19.3 and 19.4 systems, ESPECIALLY if they are both UPOATED to the current software.

      Has anyone else experienced this minor problem? I didn’t even see it myself until recently when I wanted to dim the screen brightness; it worked on the new version that we’re currently testing and it also worked on previous releases.

      Suggestions on what I can look for to see if *I* accidentally introduced a defect on my own systems?
      I’ll provide any information requested, but I’ve shared my Dell Inspiron 5558 laptop details many times in the past already.

      Thanks for guidance; if possible, I’ll fix it myself (IFF — if and only if) I can locate the issue and document or correct it.

        Have you checked to see if you are running the same version of kernel that worked before?

          I remember you finding this on antiX 19.4 testing last month, but then I didn’t have time to help troubleshoot.

          The biggest problem you are having is that the i915 kernel driver is not loading properly. I recommend you to
          A. Try the antiX 19.4 edition with kernel 4.19 (better intel support) booting NORMALLY (NOT safe Video Mode or Failsafe).
          B. Try the current antiX 19.4 Live boot with the parameter
          i915.modeset=1 xorg=intel
          or just
          i915.modeset=1

          All packages are included in antiX 19.4 (no need for you to go through the same path you did last month), as I can confirm on my system, but sometimes you need to use one of the very convenient antiX Boot parameters. On one of my devices I need to boot with xorg=intel to boot to graphical interface with intel xorg driver (which they say is deprecated and it is better to use modesetting but it works for me).

            This fixed it, provided I booted the USB stick without UEFI. WITH either of the options and UEFI the system would hang within the first 30 seconds after login or less.

            After installation it also works, so that indicates that I must have built that one ISO image from a limited graphics mode because my antiX 19.3 and antiX a2 testing images also work.

            I’ll mark this solved.

              I have it working on UEFI, but I don’t have the same intel chip.

              Good thing it works properly for you on antiX-21a2 out of the box. Hopefully this continues to work in the future betas.

                I’ll also correct my erroneous title. I found that the old kernel was unstable on my 64 bit system but other newer kernels have been up several hours, so I’m not going to file any defect. In the past I could run any kernel; that is no longer true. Anyway, the Backlight Brightness works on antiX 19.3, 19.4 and the current test release. SOLVED.

                  Just an FYI and a possible explanation why this “broke” in the first place:

                  I had other USB drives that I simply created directly from ISO images.
                  I also created the newer test release image from a remaster, but I did not mess anything up.
                  While I’m still not 100% certain what explicitly caused by issue, the 19.4 and 21 a2 images were remastered; all others were straight Format USB followed by Live USB Maker.

                  I ran a fresh Format USB, then I ran Live USB Maker on a freshly downloaded antiX 19.4 image. Checked out the Live instance and the Backlight Brightness worked. Then I installed it and again it worked.
