      I was finally able to try out Badwolf. For now I won’t be able to use it. Can someone tell me if there is a menu? I need a way to enlarge the page, like Ctrl++. My eyes are too bad to read most pages without being able to enlarge. But I can’t figure out how to do it in Badwolf. I’ll try a google search but if anyone already knows please share.

      Thanks,

        Okay, I found an article on https://hacktivis.me/git/badwolf.mdoc/, which is apparently the manual. A little sketchy, but I figured out how to enlarge the pages. It says “webview Ctrl-Scroll Zooms the webpage in/out.”. At first I was confused, thinking it was the “Scroll” key on the keyboard (I recalled a Sroll Lock key) and my Logitech wireless keyboard did not have such a key. Then I realized it was saying to hold the Ctrl key and then scroll the mouse. Not sure how I would do this without a middle scroll wheel or a touchpad with two finger scroll. But maybe there is a way. Anyway, I tried it and it works. Now I can see the text!

        But no bookmarks? or saved passwords? That will make it harder for me to use. I think I will stick with SeaMonkey.

          @Seaken64: I “hear” you.

          At least right now this browser has rough edges and minimal features.

          I will say this much: it’s quite memory efficient. I stumbled across a rather simple scenario, only reading an Email and opening a second tab caused CPU usage to spike up to 100% on ALL four of my processors, also causing the fan to turn on full speed. It didn’t lock up, interestingly enough and it did allow me to exit, and memory cleaned up immediately and CPU dropped back to normal. I have not yet repeatedly done this so I have not been able to isolate the cause.

            I think it’s meant to be minimal and use keybindings instead of a menu and mouse clicks. I just don’t need that in my case. I’m sure others will find it useful.

            Reminds me of my DOS days and how I kept resisting Windows and other GUI’s. I don’t need no pretty little pictures or any rodents! Back then I remembered commands. Now I can’t remember where I put my glasses.

              @masinick,
              Been trying to replicate high cpu and memory usage. Maybe it is only a problem with certain sites. 12 Tabs open, a lot of images involved, RAM usage 915 M which is low. Once pages are loaded cpu settling back to below 3% while I am writing this, without input 1%, been messing for more than an hour now. This is “Pentium(R) Dual-Core CPU E5300 @ 2.60GHz” 2 gb memory Dumpster special PC.

              I agree bookmarks would be useful, maybe a tab with search engine. When I open with meta-ger I get an error but cn still use the browser. That again might be installation specific.

              We, most users in group that is use Claws, none yahoo, some offer their personal information and communication on
              a plate = GMail. That is about choice.

              Password manager was mentioned, we prefer outside of the browser, that offers better security so for us no thanks on that.

              We have no video, probably due to our Dracula Antix, MPS and SM tube along with VLC get the job done so no issues with that.
              Maybe that is the reason for low CPU Usage. Even gifs are still on memory hogging web.de and gmx sites, nice.

              Some few sites, notably mozilla.org connection refused :-).

              As seaken64 says minimal using keybindings, takes some experimenting and personal memory usage. Working on that.

                @moddit: memory usage in Badwolf is very low, it’s the inexplicable spike in CPU usage that is an occasional problem.

                Simple usability improvement e.g. easy to use and access bookmarks, user preferences and font selection would also be nice. It may be there, if so it is obfuscated and not obvious. These are simple things to add at a relatively low cost in resources.

                  Tip:
                  For users that want another more “modern” way of using Badwolf with favourites- you can try running it using https://www.symbaloo.com/ as it’s start page… Not perfect, but quite handy (it saves your bookmarks on-line)
                  Cons: you are saving your bookmarks on-line– so the privacy part of this browser is greatly decreased…

                  P.

                    @masinick:
                    Some young users had high memory and high cpu at times. This problem was in this instance definitely not Badwolf, so pretty certain not related to your observance.

                    Tor was starting and running headless at somewhat random intervals after bootup, we also found.

                    Some major warez/software cracks and other slimy stuff along with some erotic sites make the Tor browser unresponsive, using app killer only closes the window,
                    Tor is running on. Cryptomining or whatever. Network is not very active.

                    Kids are very inquisitive, tried out http://torlinkbgs6aabns.onion/ which was published in Ct online by Heise Verlag. That points to a reasonably insane so called darkweb search engine.

                    Anyways we are more watchful now. And have scrubbed and reinstalled affected boxes.

                    Hopefully attention to Firewall rules now and more sites blocked in hosts.

                    The great advantage of using a live anamnesic stick when visiting risk areas of the net will be discussed shortly, with my daughter. She has to go back to school classes soon and can pass on some
                    things first hand. I will stay away covid cases rising rapidly again now, old guys like me are sent
                    home to die if they get infected. politicians are btards living gold plated lives.
                    Many thanks to olstyn for a lot of good pointers and advice from his trials.

                      badwolf 1.0.3-4 release

                      PPC came up with an idea and created a startpage to act as a landing page for every time badwolf is launched or a new tab is opened.

                      Thanks to this, I started working with PPC and we finally have this release here.

                      What is new:

                      – Bug fixes from the main developer (https://hacktivis.me/releases/badwolf-1.0.3.txt)
                      – Landing page with many links highly used (antiX linux, forum, MX linux, and others).
                      – Search box for most used search engines (only ddg and google). The search defaults to DuckDuckGo, but clicking “Google” button will let your search start on Google.
                      – Added a “Favorites Manager” yad application to manage the links under “Favorites” on the startpage. This is intended to replace the missing bookmarks problem this browser has (until the developer adds full bookmark support). You can call for the link manager with the key combination “Control + B” from inside badwolf.
                      – Possible fix for the freezes that came when you click “skip add” and other buttons on youtube. It isn’t really a fix, as I only changed a recommended package to a main dependencies. Hopefully this fixes it for most of you (it is fixed for me on most of my machines). This is not a propper solution yet. I have found that on one of my machines with an antiX core build I cannot view videos (missing some component for HTML5), but youtube works on firefox on the same machine. So this is still a work in progress and I hope to, at some point in time, find all the missing dependencies.

                      Very few changes, but it makes it more practical for most of us. Also, don’t expect anymore changes in the main code from me. C Language is still a mystery for me and every change took days of my lifespan.
                      What I do want to do is add a few hotkeys, like Control + W to close tabs, and maybe some other (suggestions welcome). Have a look at the Hotkeys in the startpage. I will add all requests related to the actions of those hotkeys (if I can). There are ones I would like but I don’t know how to add (Middle click to open link on a new tab, or the same behavior for Control+left-click), so don’t ask me for those.

                      How to install (requires online connection and updated packagelists):
                      Option 1. Open a terminal, move to the Downloads folder (or wherever you downloaded the file) and run:
                      sudo apt install ./badwolf_1.0.3-4_amd64.deb
                      or for 32 bits:
                      sudo apt install ./badwolf_1.0.3-4_i386.deb

                      Option 2. Using drag and drop (from ROX filer or SpaceFM).
                      Launch a terminal and start writing (but don’t execute)
                      sudo apt install
                      Open you file manager (Rox or Spacefm) and navigate to the folder containing the badwolf .deb. Select the badwolf deb file and drag it to the terminal. It will fill out the rest of the command with the path to the badwolf file. Run the command and it will install.

                      The source tarbal files are here: https://gitlab.com/nXecure/my-packages/-/tree/master/badwolf/badwolf-1.0.3-4

                      Special thanks to PPC, who is the main reason this new release was possible.

                      All feedback welcome.

                      antiX Live system enthusiast.

                        Many Thanks PPC and Xsecure,

                        Installed the update and using now, this looks like a massive usability improvement,
                        maybe now I can get kids to use Badwolf more instead of the Palemoon.
                        .

                        Now i have to remember how I had set the first tab to MetaGer search :-).
                        For us google had to go but it was easy to change to another choice.

                          @Xecure:
                          Many thanks! Badwolf now skips YT adds! Yeah!
                          But I’m having some strange problems here at my office pc- badwolf does not load the startpage. For the startup page and the bookmarks editor to fully work, I have to copy the contents of /usr/share/badwolf to ~/.config/badwolf and run “badwolf ~/.config/badwolf/startpage.html” … And launch the bookmarks editor manually from that folder… but this antiX install is not doing so well- app-select refuses to work, etc… I’ll have to test at home…

                          As always, thanks for your efforts, Xecure! This brings to antiX a “secure” (pardon the pun 🙂 ) web browser than allows users of even very low end machines to navigate the modern web!

                          P.

                            This is still too soon to say, as I experience some weird things with badwolf on 1 machine, so not sure it will work well for everything. Sometimes Duckduckgo search will not work until I activate JS. I really would like a better hotkey than Alt+J to activate javascript.

                            Now i have to remember how I had set the first tab to MetaGer search :-).
                            For us google had to go but it was easy to change to another choice.

                            It took time for me to learn how to create search boxes without any javascript, but I am getting better. To change the search engine from duckduckgo to metager, open ~/.config/badwolf/startpage.html with a text editor and replace some lines of code. I have done it for you, so you simply have to replace the file in the folder with the one attached. It will now ONLY search using metager, so no accidental misclicks will lead to google. You can customize the startpage as much as you want and, hen happy, simply copy it to any computer with badwolf and replace the one in ~/.config/badwolf/ with your custom startpage.

                            Every time badwolf launches, it checks if there is a startpage in the ~/.config/badwolf folder. If not there, it will copy it from the . If you are having trouble simply delete the file (copy the favorites links to a separate file first) and next time you launch badwolf it should copy the startpage again.
                            Anyway, yad sometimes gives me some trouble until I reboot. But I may have to go back and check if there is something I implemented wrongly.

                            This brings to antiX a “secure” (pardon the pun 🙂 ) web browser

                            Ha! without javascript it is great, but with it ON, it isn’t always fun.
                            Not as secure, as skidoo pointed to me some things that could change to make it more secure, but I really have no idea how to implement them. If there is interest, maybe we can convince him to take a look.

                                @xsecure,
                                thanks for the answers, on search engine we misunderstood each other, On this latest version
                                I left Duck and replaced google with MetaGer. No matter because i learned more from the way you did it.

                                In the old version I started with metaGer as first tab, that is still active so your changes
                                work on second tab when I open it.
                                Right now I am not sure where I set the MetaGer start in the old version. Will look after some sleep.

                                No matter because i learn more.
                                https://maps.metager.de/ is nice too because non tracking, can be used for route planning.

                                Duck has these too for non java search.
                                https://html.duckduckgo.com/html
                                https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite

                                I only switch on java if I am more or less forced to do so. Mostly sites will work without but not
                                all with same browser. For a couple of important but very stubborn sites I have a separate isolated
                                user and pretty much standard Firefox browser.
