I don’t know if (or for how long) the use of a different browser will enable you to read or access any Web page content. If it IS possible and all you need to see is plain text, then the dillo Web browser is perfect for that.

If you can get some content with dillo, you can attempt to use Palemoon. This browser is similar in feature set to the Firefox browser, but is simpler and it consumes fewer resources.

You can try Google Chrome or Chromium if you wish, but these browsers and Firefox do consume more resources and are likely to be unable to perform on crippled hardware or systems with limited resources.

Other ideas from people with superior knowledge and ideas are certainly welcome.

My rankings in order of ability to view more of the web (and in reverse order of needing most resources):
          1. Pale Moon
          2. Seamonkey
          3. Badwolf
          4. Netsurf
          5. links2 in graphical mode (i.e. by starting it with the command “links2 -g”)

          That’s been my experience.
links2 in graphical mode is a true diamond in the rough. I wrote various how-to’s from my experience customizing it and using it as my daily driver here: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/graphical-web-browser-uses-5mb-memory

              @andyprough many thanks,
especialy for the link to the trisquel thread which contains extremely useful information,
also for users of more modern machines who run an OS which boots in to ICEWM with very low RAM and cache usage.
Start a modern java loving memory hog, er Browser bye bye lightweight and fast.

Will definitely use links 2 much more now I have better usage and setup info.

@Moddit – You can start links 2 in graphical mode from it’s desktop file – editing the exec line to point to duckduckgo.com makes it even easier to use – despite some formating problems pages like wikipedia, some news sites, the the antiX forum can be viewed in xlinks.
If you use smtube to view YouTube videos and claws or seamonkey email to access your e-mail, and messaging software, a great chunk of the Internet is available without using a “modern” web browser… (Of course, excluding Social Networks)

@PPC – yes you are right, a lot of what I wrote about on that Trisquel thread about using links2 is already setup in antiX, including the adblocking already setup. antiX would really be the ideal platform to get maximum use out of links2 in graphical mode. I agree, with links2, smtube, email, and possibly a lightweight feed reader such as newsboat, you can almost forget that the modern Chrome-centric web exists. Those who are smart enough to use non-js alternatives to major sites, such as “nitter” for twitter and “teddit” for reddit can take it even farther.

                    Thanks PPC and andyprough

I have found some sites where links2 will not work, Zeit is one, not important as tor
is waiting. E Commerce sites are also all pretty much java and fingerprinter loaded.
                    Internet banking same.

                    Regarding light applications

                    alias yt=’ytfzf’
I find ytfzf beats sm tube, just takes a while to learn how to use its
capabilitys, still exploring the alternatives for scraping content. With an extension
it can show thumbnails, I do not bother. It accepts comma separated playlists, tab selects
an item from search results, just down arrow to next wanted tab again, tap enter after
selecting what is wanted. Using tab method going back and forth in the list videos can
be selected in a certain order of choice.
I self compiled/installed latest ytfzf, easy and quick as long as older version is first
uninstalled, it has some improvements fixes.

MPV does the payer part, much improved video quality now with help, inspiration settings
filters from subluminal, input from blur13 too, thread mpv –hwdec=auto.
ytdl is the helper application and can of course also be used to download a video for local
                    provisioning.

For Email I know nothing to beat claws, especialy filtering and actions are really helpful.
Actions meaning deleting trash mails according to self made rulesets.

Will take a look at teddit, have no use case for twitter.

@Moddit – yes, there are banking sites and other sites that simply won’t work without javascript, this is true. It is a bit limiting. But at the same time it’s pretty amazing how much you CAN accomplish without any js. And how nice it can look in a terminal browser if you customize it.

ytfzf is awesome. If you use “ytfzf -L” it will return just the URL for the video, which you can then copy into an mpv command. I use it with ytdlp instead of youtube-dl, as ytdlp has some speed and connection quality enhancements. I link ytdlp to /usr/bin/youtube-dl so that mpv knows to use it.

                        andyprough,

Thank your for sharing the link to your discussion on the trisquel forum. I read it with great interest. I’ve been using Links2 as my main browser for over a year now. The only things that I would add are:

                        1) use a modern font (Setup/Fonts), I’ve switched to bitstream_iowan_old_style_bt.ttf and related iterations for bold, italics, etc. I think it makes the browser feel more, well, “modern”.

                        2) Change to Display optimization for LCD (RGB) in Setup/Video options. The default is for CRT. This makes a BIG difference.

                        3) Create a “dark mode” by changing and saving the settings for a dark style, and copying the config files to new files, eg dark and dark2. There are two config files, one for the HTML options, and one for the Setup options. Before you do that, save your current “light theme” settings to eg light and light2. Then, using a bash alias such as

                        alias linksd=”cp /home/$USER/.links2/dark /home/$USER/.links2/html.cfg && cp /home/$USER/.links2/dark2 /home/$USER/.links2/links.cfg && xlinks2 google.com”

                        alias linksl=”cp /home/$USER/.links2/light /home/$USER/.links2/html.cfg && cp /home/$USER/.links2/light2 /home/$USER/.links2/links.cfg && xlinks2 google.com”

You can easily switch between dark and light theme.

And just to further clarify using “nitter” to view twitter without JS. Follow a link to twitter, hit “shift-g” to edit the current url, and change twitter.com to nitter.net, leaving the rest of the url intact. Same with reddit.com links, but change to teddit.net.

Hallo andyprough & Blur 13, thanks for more helpful tips, Links2 looks way less impressive and
                            functional than it is.
No function on my bank site is due complicated ID setup which uses a verified phone and 2D codes
plus 2 communication channels. i think that is all about evading responsibility,
if things go wrong the intransparent setup makes it easier to blame account holders.

will try and setup metager2 and duck search engine alias later today, my preferred meta search engines.

For later readers: pressing escape or left clicking in the top window frame toggles menus on off.
F9 showing F10 also opening menu, very quick menu navigation with arrow keys.
                            F1 pops up a window showing keycodes/shortcuts.

Interestingly non functioning google analytics was blocking a site usage this morning.

Using DuckDuckGo with links2 is proving comfortable. I have not found a solution for metager,
may contact the devs and ask for help. Will see if I can understand how to use other engines.

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=search_term_here&kp=-1&kl=us-en would get answers in US english

                              Some language parameters
                              br-pt for Brazil
                              fr-fr for France

Regional search can also be set, all very useful.

For a long list of parameters pls go to

                              https://duckduckgo.com/params

Safe Search: kp = 1 for On; kp = -1 for Moderate; kp = -2 for Off
Redirect: kd = 1 for On; -1 for Off.
HTTPS: kh = 1 for On; 1 for Off

Maybe the video play can be passed over to MPV somehow, ideas beyond URL copy and paste welcome.

You might want to try DuckDuckGo Lite

                                https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite/

I find it works really well in a “text based” browser.
