Another way to check out a different kernel: If you fire up a Live USB, you have the option to try at least two different kernels, depending on which version you’re running. You set this on one of the startup screen before you start booting, it’s very easy, and there’s very little risk involved (if any). I second the suggestion to try the antiX 23 beta. I don’t know when that will be released out of beta, but I’m guessing sometime this year.

GREAT thank you PunRanger – I will trial one or other methods and report back.

        And still another one:

        start xev from console.

it should show you a white square testing window. move the mouse into this window. Then wait for the miraculous mouse movement starting. Are there any „MotionNotify events” registered on console output while it happens? Do they read the same as when you deliberately move the mouse around within the box?

(xev should be installed by default in antiX. If not present, it is: sudo apt-get install x11-utils )

Windows is like a submarine. Open a window and serious problems will start.

Maybe when using a usb mouse the system is detecting them as a joystick and loading the joystick module. With the mouse plugged in you can see the loaded modules with the command ‘lsmod’. And to remove the joystick module (most typically joydev) use the command ‘rmmod joydev’ as the root user.
