      following up on rokytnji’s suggestion, I needed to install an xorg legacy package when I had a black screen on going into x.

      (That was suggested by anticapitalista).

        I can only see the 1:7.7+22 version in Synaptic. Is there a way to add a different version? Maybe adding an old version repo?

          It should be available on antix21, xserver-xorg-legacy
