      I guess it is safer to use a non-libre kernel because of all these patches for Intel and AMD processors, due to the security wholes these processors otherwise offer.

      I think this is a misunderstanding. The security patches are usually free. And the libre kernels get patched with them, too.

      But it is true that many machines fail to run with a libre kernel without all the non-free stuff. First things to fail are WiFi and graphics – especially Nvidia.

          It seems a bit controversial whether a microcode update is necessary for Spectre and Meltdown mitigations. Debian Wiki (https://wiki.debian.org/DebianSecurity/SpectreMeltdown) says yes, some FOSS enthusiast say no (https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guix-devel/2018-01/msg00219.html ).
