is there any way to get nvbrightness working with the proprietary driver? if not how can i roll back the proprietary driver and revert to the original? Also what are the disadvantages of the open source driver?

Is nvbrightness for changing the screen brightness or is it for some video game stuff? Is this a laptop?
Have you tried “Backlight Brightness”, the default app to control screen brigtness in antiX (for laptop monitors)? And “Screenlight”, just to see if it can control monitor brigthness (in case Backlight Brightness doesn’t work)?

If this is related to rendedirng or videogame stuff, no idea.

if not how can i roll back the proprietary driver and revert to the original?

Uninstalling the nvidia driver and unblacklisting nouveau driver (the open source driver) from /etc/modprobe.d/ (some blacklist file).

Also what are the disadvantages of the open source driver?

It depends on how new/old is your card and how well the driver will support it.
Worst case scenario: Smaller resolution, worse performance in games, or maybe less options in arandr for different screens.
For me, the bouveau works better than nvidia (but I don’t play games).

        antiX Live system enthusiast.
General Live Boot Parameters for antiX.

It depends on how you installed it.
If you have installed the driver with antiX’s own nvidia-installer from control-centre, the uninstall command is
          sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia
It will do everything necessary including the removal of the blacklist-file.

If you don’t notice any disadvantages of the open source driver then there are probably none.

For me with nvidia-driver the brightness control works

          control-centre > hardware > Backlight Brightness

when i go onto brightness control i get:
            backlight-brightness: No controller found
also when i go to: Preferences > Nvidia X Server Settings (34xx legacy version) > OpenGL/GLX Information it crashes the Nvidia XServer settings app.

i installed the proprietary driver because i thought it would improve performance, have not been able to get the games running yet so i cant tell if there are any differences.

hardware info output for my card:
            NVIDIA Corporation C79 [GeForce 9400M G] [10de:0866] (rev b1)

How did you install the nvidia-driver ?
If it crashes the settings on OpenGL/GLX Information, it looks like it is not working properly.
              Please post
              inxi -Gxxx

What may be is the case, there was a problem with the nvidia-legacy-driver from debian. It was loading the wrong glx-module.The antiX-installer has a baked in solution and will prevent this error. You can also try to do it manually.
              https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php?p=536573#p536573

But maybe better deinstall your installed version and install again with the antiX-installer.

i used the nvidia driver installer from the antix control center to install the nvidia driver.
                this is my output:

                $ inxi -Gxxx

Something is wrong. There’s no glx-rendering.

You could post the logfile of the nvidia-installer, it’s /var/log/ddm.log
and the logfile of Xorg, /var/log/Xorg.log
and hopefully we can find a hint there.

What you could also try, run the nvidia-installer again and chose the backports-driver this time.

it wont let me upload the files for security reasons, and they are too big to paste in here.

here are the errors in the xorg.log file:

[ 24.650] (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the GLX module; please check in your X
[ 24.650] (EE) NVIDIA(0): log file that the GLX module has been loaded in your X
[ 24.650] (EE) NVIDIA(0): server, and that the module is the NVIDIA GLX module. If
[ 24.650] (EE) NVIDIA(0): you continue to encounter problems, Please try
[ 24.650] (EE) NVIDIA(0): reinstalling the NVIDIA driver.

i used the “MX Test 340.108-6~bpo10+1” from backports Main repos or debian-backports instead of “Main 340.108-3~deb10u1” i guess this was a mistake?

I just tried it and on my laptop both drivers work.

What I would recommend to do.

                      Deinstall the driver with
                      sudo ddm-mx -p nvidia

                      reboot

Now the nouveau-driver should be used again. You can look if this is the case with
                      inxi -Gxxx

Then use again the nvidia-installer from control-centre , let it update the sources and don’t choose backports, just install the normal one Main 340.108-3~deb10u1,like you already mentioned.

If this doesn’t work either, you probably have to stick with the nouveau driver. Although I really wonder why it should not work for your card.

The installer-logfile is completely ok, at least I can’t find anything unusual. But it is the log of the backported driver.
Have you tried to uninstall it and then install the other driver as described above ?

i have reinstalled the non-backported driver and i get this:

                            $ inxi -Gxxx
                            Graphics:

backlight brightness still doesn’t work though.

i tried installing the screenlight package as suggested to but i get:

The package you are seaking is called screenlight-antix
It might is installed by default and can be accessed from terminal with

                              screenlight-menu.sh

The nvidia-driver is working now.Maybe someone else has an idea why you cannot adjust the brightness.
                              It’s a macbook, yes?
