Hi All,
I wonder if anyone has any experience installing one of these all-in-one wifi printers through linux? I used to have a trusty old HP OfficeJet but it bit the dust over the weekend and so I had to go and get a new machine, I work from home a lot so needed something heavy duty and reliable but didnt think to check how easy it would be to set up on Linux. I have a macbook which it works fine on so its not the end of the world if I cant get it working but would prefer it to work on my desktop.
Ive been in to Control Centre > Hardware> Set up a printer however although the tool recognises my printer as a network printer, it only allows me to install a generic text only printer and then when I try to print a test page I get something called a CUPS error. Ive been in to Synaptic and searched for cups and I have a ton of cups related ‘things’ already installed. So perhaps this is because the machine is brand new and brother havent released a linux driver yet? I have been on the brother site as well by the way and the instructions for installing a linux printer were quite frankly well beyond me as I very much got the impression you had to know what you’re doing – which I dont!
Does anyone know of a tool or an easy way to make this a little easier or am I better off just going back to brother and having a bit of a moan?
Cheers all!

::Hi – I think I am getting there. I have run through the commands/steps below and run through the prompts, however I am stuck on step 7 where it is asking me to specify a URI?? I have no idea what this means. I can only connect to the printer via wifi due to the location of it (plug sockets and cable issues etc). what do I say to this question? I entered http://localhost:631/printers/MFCJ5335DW into my browser and the printer shows up if that makes any difference?
This is what I ran through –
Step2. Open a terminal window.
Step3. Go to the directory you downloaded the file to in the last step. By using the cd command.
e.g. cd Downloads
Step4. Enter this command to extract the downloaded file:
Command: gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-*.gz
e.g. gunzip linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1.gz
Step5. Get superuser authorization with the “su” command or “sudo su” command.
Step6. Run the tool:
Command: bash linux-brprinter-installer-*.*.*-* Brother machine name
e.g. bash linux-brprinter-installer-2.1.1-1 MFC-J880DWStep7. The driver installation will start. Follow the installation screen directions.
When you see the message “Will you specify the DeviceURI ?”,
For USB Users: Choose N(No)
For Network Users: Choose Y(Yes) and DeviceURI number.
The install process may take some time. Please wait until it is complete.- This reply was modified 5 years, 3 months ago by MikeA.

::You have to look into the printer-menu on the printer itself, this differs from printer to printer, you have to find the Ip of the printer.
Its something like networksettings on the printer.
This is how the OP in the other thread managed it
Went to the printer, ran through the menus and found a menu item to print a WLAN report. That printout gave me a MAC address. Went to the router, logged in, went to the connected devices listing, I saw that the printer MAC address was assigned an IP address.
Mostly the printers have a search function or automatically function for wlan.
Sounds difficult but mostly isnt.Oops, while I wrote you already found the IP.

::Thanks for the pointers – as it turns out, it was fairly simple in the end, I decided to go for it and hit option 13 for the IP address, i enterred the IP address for the printer that I got from its networking menu and then the installer did the rest and now its all working brilliantly!
thanks for your help, I have to say, im getting used to this Antix system now and I love it! -
