If you have a GMA 900 – 3150 video card, you can enable hardware acceleration in the browser Firefox 91.

Hi. I use a 32-bit, Pentium 4, 1gb RAM laptop. Palemoon is fast enough, but there are problems in several sites. I would like to give a try to one or more builds. Any idea which ones could have better possibilities to work well with my system? And what should I do after download the tar.xz file? Thanks in advance.

          Hello andfree,

Try the default sse2 palemoon 32.0.0 rebuid (built under Centos 7 so glibc 2.17 reuqired which means Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) or Debian 8 (Jessie) or newer based ditros are supported or CentOS 7 AtlArch i386 and many more (usually any 32bit distro since 2014). Palemoon 32.0.0 is a huge webcompatibility (Chromified Web) develeponment forward, many websites are working properly again.
Another resource-efficient browser for p4 (sse2 require) is the official Seamonkey, which still has official builds for 32 bit Linux (also compiled under Centos 7), you can download it from the official seamonkey website, or you can install the latest from antiX repo if you use antiX 19 or newer.

And what should I do after download the tar.xz file? Thanks in advance.

            Thanks a lot.

Try the default sse2 palemoon 32.0.0 rebuid

It seems to me that it’s faster than the official palemoon, but, unfortunately, the problems (at the same websites) remain.

Another resource-efficient browser for p4 (sse2 require) is the official Seamonkey

Seamonkey on my system encouters problems at the same websites and it also seems to be slower than palemoon.

The third option that can still be made usable on these old machines and may has better webcompatibility than the previous ones is Firefox esr 91.13 (for Debian based distros you can find it here, and as a bzip compressed tarball here, on a P4 you can use official builds), because in this one you can still disable the webrender and activate the older xrender instead (enable the webrender.force-disabled and the gfx.xrender.enabled option in the about:config tab, and if you have opengl 2.0 capable vga card (Ati 9500 or better, Nvidia Geforce 6 or Intel GMA950 better) enable the layers.acceleration.force-enabled option (this is not stable all vga/driver combination so test it, usually openscoure Ati/Amd/Intel and proprietary Nvidia is Ok), the post a few above us is about this too…
And of course use some lightweight adblockers (e.g. uBlock Origin) if you haven’t already.

                tar.xz

A command line method to extract a tar.gz file is tar xvf name.tar.gz, for example

You may then optionally move that newly created firefox directory to a convenient location, or use it where it is.
Make sure that the extracted image properly creates the correct file permissions and protections.
I double-checked mine in the example, and everything was created properly.

Thanks for the replies. I downloaded the deb file and downgraded firefox-esr to 91.13 at once:
                      $ sudo dpkg -i firefox-esr_91.13.0esr-1~deb11u1_i386.deb

I disabled the webrender & activated the xrender.
                      I have Nvidia Geforce 4, so I didn’t enable the layers.acceleration.force-enabled option.
Then I opened Add-ons Manager, clicked on uBlock Origin, and the browser crashed. I attach the Mozilla Crash Reporter Details (I didn’t submit the report).
I restarted firefox, and this time I added uBlock Origin without any problems. Should I tick the “Allow this extension to run in Private Windows” field?
How to avoid upgrading firefox when I run a dist-upgrade command?
                      Thanks in advance.

You just need to lock the firefox-esr package, you can do it from command line ‘sudo apt-mark hold firefox-esr’ or by selecting the package firefox-esr in Synaptic package manager and locking it (lock version in package menu).

Thank you. I suppose that a 2.80GHz Pentium 4 is a slow CPU, isn’t it?
