      Hi friends

Please let me know if this is not the appropriate forum.

I bought a lousy earphone. Found out it doesn’t have to sound so lousy by adjusting the Alsamixer Equalizer.

Can anyone recommend a good equalizer setting though?

I’ve been playing around with it and I’m almost there but not quite.

      Thank you!

OT but sound advice, take a listen to Koss Porta Pro headphones.

They are not beautiful or flashy but they do sound really good.
For the money there is nothing to beat them.

You can maybe make bad in ear or headfones bearable, you can never
overcome the deficits with the equalizer. Please also remember what
sounds good to one person may make an audiophile or musician cry in pain.

Sound is a subjective experience, so whatever sounds good to you is right. Personally, I usually find that most headphones benefit from both a treble and a bass boost. I usually end up with a somewhat U-shaped curve. Beware that if you boost any frequency, you run the risk of creating distortion. The bass will start rumbling, and the high end will start sound harsh when distorted. For the use case you are describing, I’d perhaps try starting by boosting the highest and lowest frequencies somewhere around +3 to +6 db, incrementally less towards the middle, and leaving the midrange as it is. An alternative if you can’t boost due to distortion, is to lower the middle frequencies, and compensate by increasing the overall volume. This is all based on my ears and subjective experience. Personally, I’ve lost a bit of high end hearing, so I usually boost the treble as much as I can.

PS. I agree about the Porta Pros. Went through a few ones when my kid was smaller, they were great value for money. Not sure how they are priced today, though.

Here in Germany Porta Pro is about 38 to 40 Euro. I read about people breaking the cable.
My daughter would break an anchor chain within a few weeks. On my Porta pros I had to
replace the foam earpads a couple of times. Portapro takes quite a lot of listening time
            to break in.

I used to use mine on the way to work and back, got funny looks at first then one by one
more and more commuters turned up doing same.
