      Hi anticapitalista,

I’m sure it’s understood for most newbies that if they downloaded the 32-bit iso for antiX the Package Installer will only have Browsers that are supported in 32-bit. But it is not evident that most of these browsers will not work on 32-bit equipment that does not support SSE2.

Is it possible to have an indicator in the description that it requires SSE2. Maybe something like this:

Chromium Latest Chromium browser and language pack (SSE2 or better)
Falkon Latest Falkon lightweight browser (SSE2 or better)

Many folks will install the browser only to find out it won’t launch if they have a non-SSE2 processor like an Athlon-XP, Sempron, or P-III.

I looked at this the other way around.
From what I understand only Palemoon offers a non sse2 version (actually they no longer do so, we just have kept the old one in the repos)
and the description in Package Installer says this (Palemoon – non sse2 version – 32 bit only).

So anyone using a very old 32 bit box that is non sse2, their only option is to use that old (modern) Palemoon browser.

        Thanks, I’ll consider your comment.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Thanks, yes I thought of that also and I did see your note on Palemoon. The problem is that people don’t understand the others need SSE2. Maybe there can be two sub-headings?

These browsers require at least SSE2 on at least a P-IV
          Chromium
          Falkon
          etc…

These browsers do not require SSE2 and will run on P-III, P-II, etc.

They can also use SeaMonkey 2.49.4 or Netsurf. How is SeaMonkey installed? Can we install version 2.49.4 from the Package Installer?

And, apparently Firefox ESR also works on nonSSE2 machines. Yet all I have read is that FF ESR stopped supporting SSE2 after version 52. But I just ran version 68 Quantum on my antiX-19 install on this P-III. It works. Not as good as SeaMonkey and it uses more memory. But I installed NoScript on it and it works. Strange.

Back when I played with UZBL, Kazahakase, and other obscure offerings for my pentium 3 non sse2 IBM T23.

I always figured that it was up to me to solve my personal problems.
Which requires personal time on my end.
              Because I care about it.

There is plenty info on sse2 stuff already. If one cares about it.

I only used sse as a search term also.

Edit: Leaving for Colorado. Think of alternatives. Icecat. Iceape. Epiphany. Bad Wolf. Bye bye. waves hands in the air like he just don’t care.

Because really. Todays world is leaving our P3’s behind as far as web content goes.
So I figure. Run a unsupported browser on unsupported gear.
That always makes me feel better.

I agree 100%. My post was about guidance for the newbie who may have heard that antiX is good for old computers and not understand that most the browsers on the list in the PI will not work on a P-III.

Of course, if they take personal responsibility they will research it and figure out why on their own.
