Can I install antiX from disc = YES
Hi I searched the forum for an answer but didn’t find one. I even searched the wiki. I also searched the web with no answers but I did find a site that sells installation discs with antiX on it. What I want to know is, can I just make an installation disc myself on one of my other laptops using XFBurn? I have the antiX full ISO already downloaded. Ok the reason I’m having to install from disc is because, this is an old laptop that my brother used in the military a long time ago. Maybe back in the early 2000’s, late 1990s. It still has Windows XP on it and boots up just fine and runs just fine but the computer doesn’t see the 4 USB ports on it. It doesn’t even have a boot order option in the BIOS for USB. I tried installing from USB flash drive already and couldn’t get it to recognize the flash drive. So, if I buy some blank DVDs, can I use XFBurn to burn the ISO to disc to make a bootable disc, or do I need to use another program? Oh by the way the laptop is an HP Pavilion dv10000. It has 1gb ram and an Intel Centrino processor with 160gb hdd Thanks in advance!
Here’s the laptop specs. They’re not completely accurate for this laptop but will give you a general idea of what I’m working with.

::Can I install antiX from disc?
Yes. Many have done it like that. Burn a DVD with the ISO (with your favorite program) and install.
If you search the forum for DVD install you will see many have used it because of no working USB ports or, as in your case, they couldn’t select a boot device (and only CD/DVD worked).
Make sure the MD5sum of the downloaded ISO matches the one on the site to be sure it downloaded properly before burning the DVD.

::Booting from a dvd made by Xfburn should work without issue.
The boot will be slow though.Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

::Dual core with 512MB of ram?
Id bump that to 1gig myself.
Then you will love the speed you gain. If 2 gig is possible. Even better.My Pentium 3 single core IBM t23? I was able to bump that unit up to 1 gig of ram with 2 512 MB sticks of sdram.
That HP is running what now? XP?Imageburn was mentuoned. It worked for me well in XP also and was super easy to run.
Use quality dvd that will boot on your gear. Dollar store dvdrw > I don’t recommend.Lastly. Anymore. I moved on from using discs to install linux on old laptops.
I have a PLOP floppy disc and PLOP CD to bypass bios that won’t boot usb. Like a HP DV1000.

::rokytnji, the laptop has 1gb ram. That’s all it will take. Not sure if it is a single core or dual core. I have looked and it doesn’t say dual core so I’m assuming it’s only a single core. Yes it has XP currently on it. It runs fine as is but I want antiX on it. This is just a fun project for me. Thanks for the intro to Plop. I have researched it and I might try that route as well. Plop seems to be a very handy tool! Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

::@cybeghost,
late to this thread but yeh just burn the iso image to a blank disk
and boot. The base iso did fit on a cd-r and the full on a dvd-r disk.December 31, 2020 at 2:30 am #48613Memberseaken64
::@cyberghost
Use inxi -Fxz and it will tell you how may cores (or threads) are being used with your processor. Many XP era were single core but some had Hyper Threading and essentially acted as dual core. Win 7 era is often dual core.

::Yes, you can of course install from cd or dvd.
But what is also possible and has worked for me on various old ( not usb-boot capable )hardware
Burn a cd or dvd and also create a live usb stick with the same antiX version,
plug the usb-stick into a usb-port
then boot from the cd and choose the option from=usb in the boot-menu
The boot process will then first start from the cd but continue from the usb-stick.
This makes the live-session and also the installation much faster and more comfortable.December 31, 2020 at 12:41 pm #48630Member
