I was trying to test this:
      https://antixlinuxfan.miraheze.org/wiki/Short_essentials_for_a_linux_newbie#Setting_up_wi-fi

Tried with some old Android 5/6 devices with USB connection.
Just connecting, nothing happens -aside phone charging-.
Enabling USB debug mode and putting in MTP mode, still nothing.
So not even file transfer works. It’s never recognized as a device (though lsusb does see something).

Am I missing something? Or is it a bigger problem than I thought?
      Thanks again.

EDIT: after a forum search it seems an additional package would need to be installed at least for the MTP thing alone. However I’m still clueless regarding the WiFi thing…

        Hello ctcx.

Whenever you ask for help, please let us know which antiX and the specifications of your computer you are using with the command:

        inxi -zrv7

Also inform what model your Smartphone is, the Android version doesn’t help much, each brand/model has its own way of accessing the options menus.

When you connect the Smartphone to the USB port, look for the option in the drop-down menu, swipe the screen from top to bottom, look for the option “More USB connection options” (or similar text), check the option “File Transfer” or “Share Files with Computer” (or similar text).

In antiX, access Menu, Applications, antiX, Connect Android Devices via USB, open SpaceFM (in antiX 19.X) or zzzFM (in antiX 21), access your user folder and a new access folder should appear the smartphone’s internal memory.

I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original text in Brazilian Portuguese language directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

Some USB cables are good for charging only, and some are for data and charging. Make sure you have the correct cable. They all look alike. Now when I buy USB cables for phone I make sure to check on the packaging that they good for data and charging. The original cables that came with the phone normally works.

Beware of people who knows nothing; they are the ones that won't know that they know nothing.

I wrote the script that antiX uses to connect to android devices- that script was reported to not work on antix 21 before, but I currently don’t have a system with antiX 21 to test that.
On antiX 19.X I can tell you that an old android 4.4 tablet, and an android 6 phone share files without a single problem with my computer, as do more modern android devices.

Edit: the OP is not very clear- I think that the “wi-fi thing” referes to sharing an android’s wi-fi network with an antiX computer using an usb cable… that used to work on antiX 16.X, with a very old android phone (version 2.X), and I tested recently with antiX 19.X and a more modern android device and it worked very well, using connman… You’ll have to give more details, about your OS, your android devices and exactly what you are trying to do and how you are doing it, and what errors you get… My crystal ball is as off line as my antiX 21 laptop…

              P.

              I’m on AntiX 21 base.

I’m trying to follow your tips 1 and 2 for wi-fi here
              https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/short-essential-how-to-list-for-the-complete-linux-newbie/#post-37202
But since post says “enable USB data sharing”, I thought it meant device’s “MTP” function is required to use device’s wi-fi.

I don’t think it’s worth to mention all tested Android devices, since I tried just a random pack all of different brands and Android versions. All with same results described in OP.

Maybe I just forgot to try the script you mention, but since you already say it no longer works on AntiX 21…
May I suggest using an AntiX 21 live system to test?

By the way, the USB cable is not the issue. Just checked.

              Thanks for your help.

ctcx wrote Maybe I just forgot to try the script you mention,

Please do test before claiming scripts are not working, the Android Device USB connect script works on both antiX21 runit
and sys V full edititions with a lot of different devices and manufacturers involved. All of those I was able to test!.
No users calling for help either.

One script was inefective with some devices from Huawei and Honor also Xiaomi, and some but not all the samsung
devices (tested or in use), which popup a connect window intended for windoze, and wants to run an exe.

The issues with the phones I have in daily use as well as user devices started to occur after system security updates, before that I used a very simple script
and mounted to a phone directory in homescript. Now /usr/local/bin/android-device-usb-connect.sh antiX gui for mounting/unmount android devices,
                by PPC and sybok, 21/5/2020.

Allow connection on the phone, Close those windoze connect popup windows then run the script which will give access to internal storage.

With regard to tethering and bluetooth sharing I have only limited experience, not just with linux. Some of tested devices connect to keyboard mouse
and other devices easily, a couple including one tablet and some phones to nothing, that includes windoze 7 to 10.

The problems are that the protocoll for sharing is implimented by manufacturers of phones tablets etc, bugs may be worked around with windoze drivers
but never for linux. There is also a plethora of constant change to contend with.

Users are intended to think they are in control of their data (they are not) so connection to other devices has been made more complicated to near or
impossible for users while allowing a complete phone dump within minutes at an airport or by cops. If you use a cloud backup, see recent whats app or
apple exposure, your data is more or less open source.

                  dear ctcx,
the problems of this tread are 2:
                  1. internet connection through an android phone connected via usb.
This can be achivied with no probs in my antix 21 full, following PPC’s instructions.
The link is found under “ethernet” and in conky is not reported. You can verify the internet connection using ping 8.8.8.8
(plese look at the attached photo, just close to ushuaia penguings 🙂 )

                  2. to read data stored on your phone:
when I connect usb cable to my huawei, zzzfm opens a “media/cdrom” folder, that you can see in the upper part of my screenshot.
and there I stop and I dont know how to proceed to help you
                  🙂

                    I can help with that:
-You can close/ignore that zzzfm/spacefm window – some android devices are programmed to work like a small thumbdrive/cd-rom, when connected to a computer, and automaticaly display a special folder that allows users to install a Windows only .exe – that is program needed to access the android file system on Windows.
-Open Android USB Connection, using antiX’s menu or the terminal (/usr/local/bin/android-device-usb-connect.sh)
-Make sure to allow access to your android device on it’s screen and, if you have to, retry to connect to it in the antiX’s application window.
-If all goes well, you’ll have access to your android device’s contents in your antiX default File Manager

                      I must apologize to everyone.
No justification by any means, but I was actually in a brief “anxiety” issue and hastily posted. The correct thing was *read* more beforehand, instead of just taking exactly verbose the post here and at the wiki.

Researched more, and was able to solve the issues.

For file transfer, it was just running the script… Not even debug mode needed in smartphone.

                      For “wi-fi sharing”,
                      https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Android_tethering
On most tested -old- devices, it was just enabling it in phone’s settings, no MTP mode or anything else needed.

I had only heard about this tethering thing, but had never tried it. I always thought it was fairly complicated and the post here made it sound far simpler.
But perhaps it’s also as ModdIt says: depends entirely on brand and model. Not sure, but perhaps more recent devices have been made harder…?

Also, I read several carriers impose additional fees for tethering use, and even it’s completely forbidden by many other carriers in other countries. Cannot imagine why…

Sorry again, and thanks very much for your help. I learned some new things.

Maybe I should read my Simcard contract.

If i read correctly, it Seems the EU has stopped providers charging extra for using the data which has already been paid for by a customer,
on my monthly plan I have a contingent of high speed internet access, when that is finished slow access, ok for email or news readers, no go
                        for video or games.

Practices of providers in the land of the free. USA. Seems some providers have plans similar to EU, others charge extras, read
additional $20 fee isn’t unusual in the USA. the fee for data plans seem higher than we are used to, in one of the most expensive countrys
                        in Europe.

Is an interesting and informative article.

I used Tethering while working and travelling in Malaysia and Vietnam without any issues on a prepaid card. The guy I bought the sim card from
                        set it up in seconds.

With regard to how to tether, googl says some devices below android 9 have limitations, whatever that means.
Among many articles in the net https://www.howtogeek.com/170302/the-htg-guide-to-tethering-your-android-phone/
                        looks pretty easy to follow.

Just try many things are often described as being difficult but are not as hard as implied. Who wants you to think linux is difficult to work with,
in particular marketing executives from rotten fruit company and the one from redmond.

I was recalling this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tethering#In_carriers’_contracts

Reading it better, it talks mostly about additional fees…
