Cannot install VLC on Antix 22

Hi guys,
this is what I get when I try to install vlc media player via apt-get (german error message, but I guess you get the idea)

Die folgenden Pakete haben unerfüllte Abhängigkeiten:
vlc-plugin-base : Hängt ab von: libeudev1 (>= 246:3.2.12~pre3) aber 246:3.2.11-0antix1 soll installiert werden

So vlc depends on “libeudev1 pre3”, but we already have preinstalled “libeudev1 0antix1” – and vlc is not very happy about it.
The preinstalled “antix install manager” is no help, I cannot install vlc via antix package installation tool.

Nevertheless I need vlc – any ideas on how to get vlc running on antix 22?

When asking for help, please don’t forget to provide information on your system: the bare minimum is antiX version (you said it’s 22) but you need to say if it’s 32 or 64 bits, and if it’s full/base/etc…
Also you need to provided the details of your problem.

I’m assuming “preinstalled “antix install manager” means “Package Installer” – what does happen when you try to install VLC from there? Do you get any error? I’ve always installed vlc from there, without any problems… (but then again, I use antiX 19 and 21, not 22)

Edit: It’s not the ideal solution but, if you can’t install vlc, you may want to try to use it’s appimage version – it does not require installation. One of the places where you can download it is here: https://apprepo.de/appimage/download/vlc

Download it and make it executable, then you can run it… (please do not ask how to do that, if you do not know, read the newbie’s How to, that’s a sticky post that covers most of what someone may want to do in antiX).

Hi, I experienced the same today on my notebook: package ‘vlc’ was removed from my notebook installation (antiX-19 upgraded to bullseye, 64-bit) due to the same dependence.
The same is suggested on my desktop workstation at work.

– Antix 22 full version (64 bit)

– I can choose vlc from package installer and submit the installation… it LOOKS like it is installing the vlc, but within three or four seconds the package installer jumps back to its start screen and nothing happend.
No error message, no vlc installtion, no nothing.

I can choose again to install vlc and have the same result. —-> antix package installer is trying to install vlc, but it doesn’t.
Again no error message.

I guess the package installer has the same problem with the already preinstalled libeudev1.0antix1
Vlc depends on libeudev1.pre3 but there seems to be no way to install this required package….

For now I’m using the AppImage from https://github.com/ivan-hc/VLC-appimage, as the size of the download is much smaller than the one from apprepo.de. It’s a continuous build from an Ubuntu PPA, and seems to work ok for me on antiX 22. I’m assuming that it’s safe to use, but one never knows with grabbing these things from random uploaders. Anyway, the sooner we get these packages resolved the better, I guess.

Edit: This AppImage version works really well. I can even set global hotkeys, which I didn’t think I’d be able to do. Very interesting. And not using too much memory and just a bare amount of CPU.

I tried downloading the Debian Buster deb package for vlc and that led to apt spitting out three more errors over additional vlc packages. So I downloaded the Buster debs of those packages and tried to install the whole batch, and apt spit out another 6 or 8 errors on missing libraries. At that point I gave up, not wanting to destabilize or degrade my system by filling it up with older libraries. You might try it in a VM though, and see how much older stuff needs installed to get it working.

Are you talking about the nosystemd antiX buster version of VLC? or Debian?

This works on antiX 19:

3.0.17.4-0+deb10u2.0nosystemd1

Oh, you are right, I was trying the Debian packages. But just now I tried to install the nosystemd packages from antiX 19 onto antiX 22, and I still get a big bunch of dependency problems:

I have done some further tests to install VLC using stock Antix 22 on real hardware and a VM (Virtual Box)

– Stock Antix 22, 64 bit
– Nothing else installed
– Tried antix package installer, synaptic and cli to install vlc

In all cases no luck. The install process always gives back the error message the preinstalled libeudev1.0antix1 is the problem.
I have not tried to install Buster vlc package (or any snap package).
Imo the vlc install has to work “out of the box”. I don’t want to mess around with some sort of bypass solutions. 😉

There’s nothing wrong with your system: like previously stated by an user, there’s really currently some kind of dependency problem related to VLC. If you have a 64bits system, you can try VLC’s appimage, that is reported to run fine in antiX. You can also try to install flatpak and then install flatpak’s version of VLC, that probably should also run fine.
Edit: Please read the sticky posts dedicated to new antiX users: SNAPS DO NOT WORK IN ANTIX. From the best known universal packages they are the only one that does not work in antiX- do not try to install them, they require systemd, that does not work in antiX, to save resources.

There’s rarely any kind of problem in antiX repos and I never seen one last that long (I’m unsure if it’s an antiC only problem or related to the Debian repo).

Probably someone from the Dev team will post a warning, when that problem is solved…

You could try to use MPV as an alternative, it works. You can do (almost) everything in MPV that you can do in VLC, but mainly through keyboard shortcuts, config files, and command flags. VLC is better at playing .mov files from iphones, MPV struggles with those. You can convert to .mp4 using ffmpeg. Still, it would be nice to have VLC back.

Well, in my eyes appimages are these kind of “bypass solutions” I don’t want to have on my system.
Furthermore if you want to have appimages integrated into your system you have to include appimaged daemon as well. And that’s not a what I want.
In general I prefer to have programs installed from repos. 🙂 (Where do you want to start and stop supporting appimage issues….?)

I know MPV and for some or most users it might be ok to use this player.
But not for me. The reason is very simple: I don’t like it. 😉

By the way, for testing purpose I just have installed current stock Debian 64bit 11.5.0 as a VM.
Used synaptic to install VLC… and it works without any problems! 🙂

Ok, let’s wait and see what the solution for Antix will be. 🙂

Nope, not really true. If by “integrated” you mean having it available in the menu, etc, you can create a desktop file for any .appimage and they will appear in antiX’s menu, you’ll be able to place it’s icon on the toolbar or desktop, etc…
If you wanted to do that, you could try searching for examples here in forum- I do not provide an example on how to do that because you state you you don’t want to to have appimages in your system. So, for now you have to wait for the problem to be fixed, it seems anticapitalista already is on top of that problem…

Please note: appimages are not “bypass solutions”, many applications (like LibreOffice, Gimp, etc) are provided by their creators using that format. You may not like it, but some creators are trying to push universal packages: Canonical is doing that with their snaps, for Ubuntu, most other distros (like for example, our sister distro MX Linux) are pushing for flatpaks.
Ideal, for saving disk space is using .deb packages, but sometimes they do not work or are not available. On the plus side of “universal packages” they almost never have dependency problems…
