I’m completely new to Linux and have just installed antiX 19.4 on an Asus Eee PC 1001HA with a 10.1 inch screen. Resolution 1024×600.
I’m having problems with the size of some windows that are opened by applications. The height of the window is greater than the available space on the screen, so I can’t see the bottom of the window and can’t access any buttons there.
In Connman, the bottom of the Connect window in which I enter my password is masked by the taskbar, so I can’t press the OK button. In fact, at first I didn’t know that there were any buttons there, precisely because I couldn’t see the bottom of the window. I assumed that what I saw was what there was.
The workround that I found was to press Alt F11 to change to full screen mode (or do a right click on the exact edge of the window in order to open a display options menu, but this is trickier because the active area is very narrow). With full screen I could see the 3 buttons at the bottom of the window and press OK.
If I press Alt F8 in the Connect window, the window size appears as 450×601+285-28.
In LibreOffice Write, I have a similar problem with the print preview window. I can’t see the two rows of buttons at the bottom of the window and once again I have to go to full screen mode. In this case the print preview window size is 832×608+64-1.
Is there a way of making these windows open with a size that fits into the available visible space on the screen, taking into account the masking effect of the taskbar at the bottom?September 8, 2021 at 10:11 am #66694Member

::Moving windows: Alt+left-click(hold) – drag the window
Resizing windows: Alt +right-click(hold) – resize window (if possible) depending on where the cursor is (close to the corner or close to the borders has different behaviors).Sorry for the inconveniences with the connman. The cmst (the GUI for connman) is designed to support screen resolutions from 720p up, so it will experience these kind of inconveniences on small resolution screens. Fortunately, you can make use of the shortcuts described above to work around these issues.

I don’t think this is a native option of icewm (the default window manager). There was a script being developed by the community to help icewm remember the window size and position for when you launch those programs in the future, and may be helpful for your case. Hopefully I can get some time and help from BobC once the antiX 21 release becomes final to fix and update the icewm control centre project, which would make it easier to manager icewm related options.

::Many thanks.
Moving windows: Alt+left-click(hold) – drag the window
This works for me. I see that Alt F7 + drag does the same thing.
I can’t get the resizing (Alt+right-click (hold) – resize window) to work. If the cursor is at a side or at a corner, Alt+right-click opens the display options menu, which doesn’t have a resize option. If the cursor is anywhere else, nothing happens.
Anyway, with the move screen and full screen options I now have two solutions.
Thanks again.

::parippu,
Ypu can get most applications to open with given size and position and desktop,
pls search for older BobC Moddit posts. I have a 6 desktop setup so no need to move or close
windows which are stacked over others, usualy one application per desktop.Libreoffice will only keep position when you close windows correctly.
Regarding taking into account the masking effect of the taskbar at the bottom? Many of us use autohide, task bar pops up when you move mouse pointer to bottom of screen.
in the normally hidden .icewm folder in home you can find a file called preferences, to autohide
you need to search for
# Auto hide task bar after delay
TaskBarAutoHide=1 # 0/1
Set to 1 for autohide.Setting for number of desktops and naming is also in preferences file.
Set to 1 for autohide. You can change a lot of things in that file or in a preferences overrides file, just backup first when
experimenting, no need to logout and back in just check changes by entering icewm –restart in terminal
then press enter.September 9, 2021 at 9:49 am #66782Memberparippu
::Thanks. I’ve done what you suggest and enabled autohide in icewm preferences. In fact I use a similar option on another small-screen computer running (with some difficulty) under Windows 10.
Now, in Connman, with the taskbar hidden, I can see the complete Connect window, including the buttons at the bottom. However, a new user who has just installed antiX on a small computer and is trying to establish an initial internet connection without having autohide enabled, which was my situation a few days ago, will still have the problem of not being able to see the bottom of the window with the OK button (and not knowing that the window is bigger than what can be seen).
In LibreOffice Writer, with the taskbar hidden, on the Print window I can now see the first row of buttons at the bottom, with the Preview button, but not the second row, which has the Help, More options, Cancel and Print buttons. So I still have to either move the window up or switch to full screen mode.

::Under Applications->Preferences->Customize Look and Feel: you can change your font to Ubuntu Condensed & shrink the size. While this doesn’t make the window smaller, you will have to scroll it a lot less to use them. There are also GUI & other options to use smaller icons & what not. Conman has checkboxes on the main menu to press ‘less’ to make the UI more minimal

::All of the ideas above look good. You have a very tight amount of space, so you will need to make the most of it.
If you want to manually make a window Full Screen, Alt+F11 will toggle it on and off.
If you right click the titlebar of the window you can see what options are available for that window

::Another way to get more space is to use a Smaller, Thinner theme.
I would suggest trying antiX-Magic-SmallThin theme. It is a subset of the antiX-Magic-Small theme. If you don’t already have it, you would need to create a theme folder underneath ~/.icewm and then copy the zipfile there, and extract it.
To change your settings to use it go to Main menu > Settings > Themes > A > antix-Magic-Small > antiX-Magic-SmallThin and select it. Exit Connman System Tray (if its already open) and reopen it by left clicking the WiFi-WLAN0 monitor down to the right of the Battery indicator.
PS: it would help to know what your screen resolution setting options are to be able to duplicate the problem. Is 1024 x 600 the tallest one available?

::I have a netbook with the same non standard resolution… As stated above, there are several ways to work around the problems it implies. One, that I use a lot, is the keybindings to manipulate windows: in the default antiX desktop, icewm, use “Alt+Ctrl+9” to force the focused window to maximize- that often forces the window do adjust to the small screen size.
As stated above small window decorations and auto-hiding toolbars are another way to mitigate this problem. I pretty much like icewm toolbar option to rool the toolbar to one side, leaving only a tiny “restore” button- it’s like a on-demand auto-hide feature…P.

set the window to the size you want and close using the menu. After that always start LO writer with –norestore option.
My icewm toolbar entry as a sample below. The other LO applications also accept the norestore option.prog “LibreOffice 7.2 Writer” /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32×32/apps/libreoffice7.2-writer.png libreoffice7.2 –norestore –writer
You will get a nag box asking you if you want to restore if you just close the window with X top right, just answer you do not want
to restore. Should you reastore the previous document LO will probably automagically set a standard window size and go off screen.Start again.

On my Eee PC 1001HA the answer seems to be yes, 1024×600 is the tallest (and widest) resolution available (according to Control Centre > Session > Set Screen Resolution > Outputs > LVDS1 > Resolution).

On my Eee PC 1001HA the answer seems to be yes, 1024×600 is the tallest (and widest) resolution available (according to Control Centre > Session > Set Screen Resolution > Outputs > LVDS1 > Resolution).
It says online your 1001HA supports max res between 1920×1440 up to 2048×2536.
Nvidia & other modern drivers allow you to scale the screen higher than the display output to simulate higher resolutions — so maybe try to update to the latest video driver you can & play with the settings.
If your netbook display still can’t do this, it says there is a display output (with possible adapters) for a larger screen (most old non-tube TVs support 1280×720 & have PC compatible inputs).

::I have a seashell edition 1001HA here right now, resolution of the device screen is 1024X600.
Mine works fine without tricks, except as described earlier for Libreoffice.Maybe it can power external screens at higher resolution. Power is perhaps wrong word as it is
not the fastest of netbooks.September 12, 2021 at 7:31 pm #67016MemberModdIt
::In yourhome icewm you can find a file called winoptions, please experiment with below
parameter at bottom of file and set according to the number of desktops you have. You may also need to install and use wmctrl and then add again fitting to your system to
an icewm startup something like below. Do not expect Libreoffice to behave as you wish, it saves own
window placement and often ignores user settings.#!/bin/bash
wmctrl -s 3
libreoffice7.2 –norestore –writer &
sleep 4; wmadjust writer 3 1350 1155 0 0
wmctrl -s 2
libreoffice7.2 –norestore –calc &
sleep 2; wmadjust writer 2 1003 1180 908 0
### wait for writer and calc finish loading:
wmctrl -s 2 #Switches to workspace 1=2nd workspace
palemoon &
sleep 2
###wmctrl -s 0 #Switches to workspace 0=1st workspace
claws-mail &Please bear with me this was done a long time ago, older discussion is posted,
main actor was BobC who has helped me many times, his thinking is very near to mine regarding
how a computer should help not make a slave of the user..Aim was and is to login and have a work ready desktop, that mostly works as expected.
I now dislike intensly having to login then clicky clicky to open mail client claws, download new mail,
start browser, clicky to open writer and calc which i use a lot.I want the desktop to work for me and also users I provide a customized antiX, not the other way around.
I am near ready for a canoe trip so can not test much on the EEPC. I seem to remember having the same kind of
issue you have, more than a year ago. Now it seems fine, er,,after upgrading memory, fitting an SSD and an intel
wifi card instead of the broadcom rubbish hat is. Good very portable device.- This reply was modified 1 year, 7 months ago by ModdIt.
