I downloaded antiX 17.1 core 64 bit iso. I used Live USB Maker to create a live antiX on a thumb drive. It works fine in my laptop, but I don’t want to keep it.

I want to use the USB thumb drive for something else, but I have not been able to erase it or format it.

The USB thumb drive (size 500mb) shows in file manager as two drives:
      sdb1 313M antiXlive/media/antiXlive-
      sdb2 3M ANTIX-UEFI/media/ANTIX-UEFI

How do I regain use of the USB thumb drive?

      Thanks for the help.

Use gparted and set file system to fat32

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

When I tried gparted, I got a pop up Libparted Error: Partition(s) 1 on /dev/sdb have been written, but we have been unable to inform the kernel of the change, probably because it/they are in use. As a result, the old partition(s) will remain in use. You should reboot now before making further changes.
It gives the options of: Cancel or Ignore

I rebooted and was able to use gparted to create sdb1 497M antiXlive (sdb2 3M ANTIX-UEFI also still shows in File Manager.

I tried to use gparted to format sdb1 to fat32, but it didn’t work.
Attached are the details of the results.

Wordfence won’t let me copy and paste the detail nor attach a text document.

The final line of the results of trying to format are:

mkfs.fat: unable to open /dev/sdb1: Device or resource busy

Turn off auto-mount before inserting the stick. IIRC it is in the control centre under Disks

It worked. I am so glad that I won’t have to trash the thumb drive.
I will take some notes on how to do this in the future.
Thanks so much for your help.

Just as a late adjunct to this:

within Gparted there is an option under the “Partition” menu option to “Unmount” a partition. Simply unmount each partition on the stick, then you can do the format.

                      Thank you for the explanation.
I have felt rather timid about using these features for fear of damaging the drive.
I will use this method in the future.
                      Thanks again.
