I have been trying to locate a package for Kodi 18 to test on my antiX-17.4 install. I currently have 17.6 running and I do NOT want to use version 19 (does not yet support the ESPN3 add-on I use). I enabled all the test repos and the multimedia repo and updated the sources. I cannot locate Kodi 18. Version 19 is available, along with 17.1 and 17.6.
I tried downloading a couple Kodi 18.5 .deb files from the MX-17 repo but when I tried to install using gdebi I get the message that the package is already installed. I did get the “standalone” version of Kodi 18.5 to install. But when I launch it from the command line, with “kodi-standalone”, it launches my Kodi 17.6.
Maybe I should try purging 17.6 first? Or can I find a repository that will work in antiX-17 for Kodi 18? Any ideas?
Thanks,

I tried downloading a couple Kodi 18.5 .deb files from the MX-17 repo but when I tried to install using gdebi I get the message that the package is already installed.
Should i purge
purge may not be necessary.
Skip gdebi. Instead, try first:
sudo apt install /path/to/debfile
if no joy, then purge the existing and retry the apt install commandMarch 22, 2021 at 3:10 am #56211Anonymous

::linuxdaddy, why do you believe that “MX 17 ~= Buster?”
Maybe I posted an incorrect URL. I’ll recheck…

::I believe that the linked pkg URL is correct, is packaged for MX17 (aka based on Stretch)

::Thank you for your patience. I still don’t quite understand how to install .deb files or set up repos to find the file I need.
linuxdaddy, yes, I noticed those repos but as you stated that link is for Buster. When I look in the Stretch repos on that site I only get links to 17.6. Maybe 18 was never available for Stretch?
skidoo, I had already tried to use that file. I tried it again. This time I get slightly different results. (I first tried sudo apt install but it did not try to install the file, so I tried gdebi instead. Maybe I had a typo). I tried it again. This time it did give me more information on the screen. It says
Note, selecting 'kodi' instead of '/home/sean/Downloads/kodi_18.5-0.1~mx17+1_all.deb' Suggested packages: vdpau-va-driver The following packages will be DOWNGRADED: kodi 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 1 downgraded, 0 to remove and 4 not upgraded. Need to get 0 B/41.7 kB of archives. After this operation, 1,024 B of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue? [Y/n] n Abort.I stopped and checked with apt policy kodi and only 17.6 and 17.1 were available. And I can’t manage to get apt to install the version 18.5 from this file.
Maybe if I set the MX-17 test repo in my sources list? I’m not sure what the URL line is for that repo. Do I use the same URL as the file I downloaded?
