I’ve just installed antiX-17 on my Thinnkpad X31 and switched to the Xfce desktop. Now I can only log/in as root. I can log-in as david in the command line using a virtual terminal, but that’s not much consolation. I’m a long-time Linux user, but only Red Hat: Debian is a mystery to me. Does anyone have any suggestions?

::There is a change user name and password in the antix control center in the menu
It is called user manager. There are different options you can use in it.
Also. How did you install XFCE. Did you use the package installer in the antix control center?
If you used synaptic package manager. No wonder it is screwed up.
I am not being harsh. Just letting you know that being systemd free. The package installer is set up for us to avoid systemd package installs Debian gives in synaptic package manager. Systemd screws with our /usr/local/bin files since systemd defaults to using /usr/bin.http://antix.mepis.org/index.php?title=Howto_articles#Install_a_Desktop_Environment
Howdy and Welcome to AntiX.

::I installed Xfce from the package installer for just the reason you suggested.
At first I thought the installation had failed, since there seemed to be no way to switch desktops and logging out didn’t help, but I got Xfce after a reboot. The log-in window accepts my name and password, vanishes, and then comes back again.
I looked at the permissions for $HOME to make sure that I was the user of all the configuration files. I reset my password using the CLI. I’ve never seen this problem before, so I couldn’t think of any other possible problem.
I’ll have a rout around tonight and look for log files. If the worst comes to the worst, I can always reinstall using the Debian Xfce and see if that works. There are not many non-PAE installers left!

::Are you using default login manager, slim?
If you are, please post the contents of /etc/slim.confI assume you are using antiX-full or base with default repos.
Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.
antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

::I’ve had a look in the xsession-errors and the last message was
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (resource temporarily unavailable) on X server “:0”At the previous attempt it was
XIO: fatal error 2 (no such file or directory) on X server “:0”The problem doesn’t occur when I log in as root, so I assume something is amiss in a configuration file in $HOME, and it only started after I installed Xfce.
Installing Xfce has switched me from slim to lightdm, but all the lines in the configuration files are commented out, so what’s loading Xfce?

::Well, I’ve found the solution. I’ve installed Xubuntu, which works perfectly on my old P3 computer!
