Hello, I’ve disabled all startup services ( which was a dumb move ), and now whenever I start my PC it starts a tty. By starting udev and slimski I was able to get to the login manager and login into my account, but now when I start udev and slimski and enter my username and password, it just freezes for a second and brings me back to the login manager. How can I log in again?
I’m new to Linux so my question might sound stupid.

There are ways, I am certain, to fix this. And until/unless someone who has the knowledge wants to write up a tutorial, I recommend that you:
        1) save any important data to an external disk, and
        2) reinstall antiX.

We all learn for our mistakes (read: unintended outcomes). I dare to say that most of us have done something equally as foolhardy. Now you know not to do that. 🙂

Before resorting to reinstall, from tty can use “sudo sysv-rc-conf”. We usually goto runlevel 5 at boot, but runlevel 3 have a nearly identical set of default autostarted services. All the items seen active for runlevel 3, enable those for runlevel 5 also. This will get back to default configuration, or nearly so. And if “networking” is not enabled for runlevel 3, do also enable it for runlevel 5. When you exit [[[Q]]] sysv-rc-conf, changes are saved. Reboot and assess whether everything is now as expected, as desired.

Can someone please post an opinion of what is the minimum set of required services? Or different, a list of service items which can be considered non-essential for “normal” everyday use?

edited: I remove comment about networking. In Christophe’s screenshot, we see it is not enabled by default for runlevel 5.

To followup on iznit’s idea, you could use a live-usb, and run that command. Write down the default setup found there on the live system. And then manually fill in the same configuration onto your installed system. That should get you up again.

OK. Here’s mine, in case this may help. (Click the images to see them better.)
Note, virtualbox & zram are installed on my system, but maybe not on yours. The rest are probably defaults.

I tried setting the startup services back to default ( copied Christophe’s screenshot ) and it seems to work now. When I enter the username and password it takes 10-15 seconds to enter the login manager for some reason, but I’m fine with that. Thanks for the help!

Are you using SysVinit or runit version?

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

If you are using runit, then you start/stop services differently.

Since you can now get into the desktop, run this from a terminal

                      sudo runit-service-manager.sh

Make sure you have at least these ones running.
(You might need to Add them).

My bad, I’m using SysVinit. Sorry about that.

Just out of interest, why did you disable all services as you mentioned in your first post?

Also, quick question, how do I change the desktop manager? I’m currently using IceWM and I want to switch to KWin.
