      Hi Everyone,

My Android tablet won’t mount in Antix 21. I try to mount it using the dedicated application from the Antix menu, and I get a mtp error every time. I have mtp-tools installed.

There’s no problem mounting with my debian bullseye system. It comes right up in Thunar.

      Thanks for any suggestions.

      Lars.

Thanks for your reply, but…I don’t understand that conversation at all.

What exactly is I need to do to mount??

          Sincerely,
          Lars.

I had to do the 4 steps in this guide first on my phone.
            https://mac.eltima.com/mtp-mode-android.html

Then I opened android-device-usb-connect app from the menu and it connected and opened rox-filer

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Why don’t I have to do those steps on a plain debian bullseye system?

Probably because you are using a desktop environment?
Maybe installing gvfs will automate it?
Do you have thunar installed on antiX?
Without you giving more information, all we can do is guess.

                  Thanks to PPC.
Please plug in the tablet and try the below script. Android USB mount app will not mount my No Google phone. The script mounts everything I try it with.
For testing you can copy and paste in to the terminal. Regarding debian it is a somewhat different beast. The big issue is not the OS it is google or
vendors throwing stricks between our legs.

                  rm ~/.jmtpfs-output2.txt
                  dir=”$HOME/android-device”
                  mkdir -p “$dir”
jmtpfs -o auto_unmount “$dir” |& tee -a ~/.jmtpfs-output2.txt # if output includes “bad mount point” then user has to press “Allow” on device’s screen and try to mount it again
                  xdg-open “$dir”

##check if user has to “allow”: check if output includes has the expected content:
                  mount_check=$(cat ~/.jmtpfs-output2.txt | grep -c “bad mount point”)
                  echo $mount_check
                  if [ “$mount_check” -eq “1” ]; then
                  read -n 1 -s -r -p ” Select Allow on you android device then press any key” && fusermount -u “$dir” && jmtpfs “$dir” && xdg-open “$dir”

Yes I have thunar installed on Antix.

The tablet shows up in thunar on my debian bullseye system, but not in Antix. I’m wondering why, since Antix 21 runs debian bullsey. Is something broken in Antix 21?

                    Sincerely,
                    Lars.

                      Hmmmm, is antiX broke?

                      1. I took a USB, used Live USB maker and burned antiX 21 full 64 bit
                      2. I booted it, ran the antiX updater, ran Package Installer and added the newer kernel, Remastered, and rebooted
                      3. I ran Manage Packages (synaptic) , did a Reload, installed xfce and the obvious recommended packages
                      4. I plugged a USB data cable into my Android phone and PC
                      5. I enabled file transfer mode in Notifications on my phone
                      6. I ran the antiX menu option called Android Device USB Connect. A message box popped up on the PC telling me to go allow it on the phone
                      7. A message popped up on the phone and I clicked Allow
                      8. I clicked Retry on the PC and it connected
                      9. A Rox-filer file manager box with the phone folders popped up
                      10. I ran Thunar (installed as part of xfce4) from the menu and the phone appeared on it, too. See attached pic.

Note that I didn’t need to do anything fancy or run any special scripts or use a terminal at all other than to hit Y or enter when prompted during the updates.

Welcome to antiX. It is based on Debian, but it is NOT Debian, and so there are differences, but mostly in performance, LOL.

Please don’t waste our time with lines like “it doesn’t work”. If you have a problem and want help, try again and keep things simple by taking defaults and only installing what is necessary to figure out what is wrong. Provide your system details, make notes what you did and any messages or things that happened. See the post by PPC if you need pointers. https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/short-essential-how-to-list-for-the-complete-linux-newbie/

If that isn’t acceptable, feel free to run Debian if that makes you happy.

                        The script doesn’t work

Rubbish, I use it frequently.. If as you post you do not allow media
transfer how do you expect it to work.

The script may not work on some particular devices but I have not foud one yet.

You claim You do not need to allow MTP or possibly ADB debufgging from advanced
or developer options on an android device to connect with debian. Thats Magik.

Pls. Explain how you rooted your device then changed android system permissions
                        permanently. .

                          Hi Everyone,

                          Please don’t waste our time.
antiX is based on Debian, but it is NOT Debian.

Thanks for your reply. It is not my intent to waste your time, only to find out how to mount a tablet…I follow similar steps, but fail at step 6. Also, I have icewn, not xfce. And Android 4.

I should add that I tested mounting an Android 12 device on Antix 21, and it mounted fine, exactly as described in your steps. However my Android 4 tablet mounts on debian bullseye, but fails to mount on Antix 21.

As you say, the reason it doesn’t mount may be that it is NOT debian.

                          Sincerely,
                          Lars.

                            Hi again,

Thanks for your reply. It is true: the script fails. I copy your lines into a file, make it executable, run it, and it fails. I get errors that I interpret as saying that there are unnecessary quotes in the script….

I didn’t root anything. I also didn’t make any claims about mtp or adb (whatever that is?).

                            Sincerely,
                            Lars.

                              on antiX 21, icewm.
Just did a cut and paste in to the terminal, available devices mount immediately
                              and zzfm opens.

Many scripts need a starter to run, or a pointer to the terminal you are actualy using.
                              I just use rox term.

Pls give details of errors when you run the script directly,
not I interpret, or it doesnt work. Or works on debian.

If you give those trying to assist enough information you will get a much friendlier responce.

mind reading or remotely viewing errors on a users screen without a connection.

As BobC pointed out thre are many differences between antiX and debian, not just the init.

You are comparing apples with oranges.
Your Debian system uses XFCE while antiX uses IceWM.
Install all of XFCE (as BobC did) so it includes the same apps/libs as what you have on Debian, and try again (after a reboot).

                                  Yes, anticapitalista is correct.

I went to install Thunar, and it reccommended installing about 100 other packages. There was zero probability that I would install and configure all of those correctly, so I guessed that if you were using Thunar on Debian, that you had installed the XFCE flavor of Debian, and therefore I installed XFCE on antiX so that the things that were normally installed together with Thunar from XFCE would be there and be configured correctly. You gave us very little detailed info to work from, so I did my best at guessing, and it worked on the first try.

Another way that worked was to install XFCE-light from the Software Installer (or Package Installer). That also worked on the first try.

I am running the antiX default rox-icewm desktop on the PC. I installed XDCE to get Thunar complete and correctly configured, but I am not running the XFCE desktop.

Another possible cause is your 4.x version of Android. That’s pretty old and maybe needs to be configured differently. Mine is 8.1

PS: My guess at this point is your Android 4 device is not configured right to work with MTP assuming you are using the same cable that worked with the android 12 device. You need to enable MTP file transfer on your tablet, I think. Sorry, I don’t have an Android 4 tablet to test with.
