::Hi,
the typical minimal input to tell us more about the system (HW and antiX version) is output of ‘inxi -Fxz’.
You may also post information about the most recent update (if it caused the issue), ‘/var/log/apt/history.log’ (must be opened as root).
1) vent at max.:
Is the computer inner part free from dust?
2) file-browser/manager:
2.A) You can browse files from terminal using the utility ‘mc’, (un)mount using terminal as well (at least in the meantime).
Also, some text/console-based web-browser can be used for the same task.
2.B) You could also try to reinstall the filebrowser.Hopefully, someone will be able to help once you provide the inxi output.

::Hello Smallred and Sybok.
I’ve seen this problem happen at least once with antiX 19.3 and 19.4. When I clicked on the shortcut icon on the file manager IceWM toolbar, the program would not open and the CPU fan had become stronger. The system monitor in the system tray kept showing the levels very high, similar to the levels when the same computer is browsing the internet on the YouTube site. I didn’t report this problem here on the forum, because I suspected hard drive problems. However, the file manager antiX main menu shortcut icon could open normally.
Smallred, I appreciate you creating this topic.

Contudo, o ícone de atalho do menu principal do antiX do gerenciador de arquivos conseguia abrir normalmente.

::Hi smallred, you didn’t tell us which file browser you want to use.
You can start it from terminal and post the output here. So if you use rox-filer type
rox
or if you use zzzfm type
zzzfmMay 28, 2022 at 5:46 pm #83754Member

Thank you, Caprea. If this problem happens to me again in the future, I will know what I should do to report the problem here.

Obrigado, Caprea.

::OK, sounds like you are using rox-filer
So what happens if you type in terminal
rox
and enter to start the file browser from there. Does the terminal give any output?May 28, 2022 at 11:17 pm #83765Moderator

::When I had a laptop with the AMD C60 cpu, I used a 4.x kernel. It worked well. So, when you boot up, try the “legacy” (4.9.x) kernel. Maybe that kernel will work better on your computer.

::That’s true. I completely forgot about the kernel. Try the 4.9 kernel in the advanced options on the bootscreen and follow Christophs advice.

::This reminds me of my Pentium III.
I agree with the suggestions already made. Check the CPU temp (hover over the system monitor next to the clock). Check the cooling if the temp is high. Is the CPU load running very high when this happens?
If CPU is heavily loaded a lot, you could run a window with htop sorted by CPU percentage to find out what program is the culprit. My first guess would be web browser, but yes, it could be the file manager.
Anyway, if the other ideas don’t fix it, since its not a very fast CPU, and maybe just run lighter apps. The solution for mine was to ask it to do less so it didn’t get overloaded.
For a file manager on a slow machine, I too like Midnight Commander (mc). Try it or another very light (probably terminal based) file manager. You can search the internet for lightweight linux file manager to get ideas. If you find one you like, change the default file manager to it. You can always run rox or zzzfm when you need to.

::So the other krnel doest make any visible difference. But the rox in terminal opens the rox filebrowser. just that I dont like it because it does not have the overview on the left side. No idea how to access external drives with that… I changed at some point the standart app for filebrowsing to another one.
now i learn how to use the rox properly or I get the other one running.

::It sounds like you would be happier with zzzfm as your file manager. Try it, and if you like it, make it your default file manager.

::Go to
menu > control-centre > desktop > Preferred Applications
Click on the file-manager button. In the opening “select file” window click on the “applications” button on top.
Now you can scroll down and open the zzzfm.desktopThis should solve the problem with the menu and taskbar buttons for the file-manager

::Smallred, if the “problem” was resolved with Caprea’s explanation, then I recommend you read these excellent tutorials created by @PPC:
What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.When I first started using antiX, I read the tutorials that PPC created, these readings saved me a lot of time and I think it saves time for any new antiX user. Your time will not be wasted with these readings, everything will seem to be much easier than you could imagine. You won’t waste your time searching the internet or even creating new topics, on the contrary, you will gain a lot of time with these readings.
I recommend you try out desktops that have “zzz” in their name. I usually use zzz-IceWM or zzz-JWM or zzz-Fluxbox (each of these desktops has its own characteristics and consumes more or less resources), zzzFM will be the default file manager for your desktop, it it is very similar to the other file managers of other GNU/Linux distributions and Windows XP. To access other antiX workspaces, click on Menu, Desktop, Other Desktops and click on the workspace name, instantly the workspace will be loaded.
Whenever you need to ask for help or technical support, post the output of the terminal command $ inxi -Fxz, copy and paste here in the message of the topic you are going to create in this forum.
When you start a topic or participate with a post, remember to check the option “Notify me of follow-up replies via email”, by checking this option, you will receive a message in your email box whenever there are replies from topic in question.
I realize now that you didn’t receive these important instructions. I don’t know how to write in English and I send my texts translated by the internet translator. I hope you can understand everything, if your native language is not English, please translate my original Brazilian Portuguese text directly into your language with the help of internet translators.

What is antiX and how to try it out or install it.
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie.
How-to install applications – 2020 version.
How to: correctly use antiX forum.
