I have an older laptop that isn’t running so well anymore with Ubuntu, so I am experimenting with some other lightweight distros before installing one. AntiX has been the best so far, but I can’t figure out how to get HDMI to work. In Alsa, when I switch audio devices, nothing happens. Sound simply continues to come from the built-in speakers.

      When I do
      speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:1,3
it echoes to me that it is running a test, but no sound comes from the HDMI.
      speaker-test -c 2 -D hw:0,0
plays properly through the speakers on the laptop.

The HDMI output works fine on the Ubuntu installation (although I remember having to mess around a bit before getting it to work – too bad that was like 8 years ago and I have no idea what I did), so I am confident that it is not an issue with the cord or anything like that.

Not an expert, but have you tried running Pulse Audio to see if the HDMI works there? All the packages are available on Synaptic, or you could read here:

        https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/

I seem to recall that running pavucontrol was particularly helpful in getting things working.

Did you try Sound Card Chooser in the Control Centre>>Hardware tab?

The second image shows hdmi is muted. You need to un-mute it and try again.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Oh yes, I forgot to mention I did try that. When I try that, it attempts to run a test and says “Test Failed (could not connect to the selected device)”

Where does it say it’s muted and how do I unmute it?

                  The MM ‘says’ it’s muted.

Open alsamixer again, navigate to hdmi as you showed in your second screenshot and press m.
                  That should unmute it.

Oh my gosh I was wondering what that MM meant and how to change it.

So now the speaker-test works on the HDMI, but I’m still getting no sound when I play a video in firefox. It now says “00” in place of the “MM”. Does that mean the volume is turned to 0? Because if that’s what it means, I also have no idea how to increase the volume.

Can you use the Up arrow back in alsamixer at the place where you unmuted the device?

No, the up arrow does not appear to do anything.

pavucontrol tells me that HDMI is “unplugged” for some reason. Interestingly, now when I change the sound card in my devices and run a test on the HDMI, instead of telling me it fails, it simply plays the sounds through my laptop speakers.

If you have a Mute key on your keyboard, try turning it off and on while something is trying to play…

                              No luck with that unfortunately.

I just tried the fix posted here. I got the audio to test successfully once, but after hitting “save” I tried watching a video, which didn’t play any audio. So I reopened the script, and the test no longer worked, either.
