My mind is blown.
Found this gem reading the comments of a hacker news thread.
Install is easy.
It works.
It uses less resources than connecting laptop to TV via HDMI and running the mp4 file in VLC. In fact, my ancient netbook eeepc is using around 5% cpu and 100 MiB RAM running Castnow.
Its way easier than a physical connection.
The laptop now functions as a remote control. I can control the video from the couch instead of running up to the TV to pause/play by hitting spacebar.
You guys can thank me later.

Any such casting software doing what Chromecast does is of great interest to me. I will certainly test it.
