Girafenaine
Hello,
I left my antiX 17.4 live USB for a new antix 19. Thank you to all the people working on antiX. It’s great and I like it very much. Using it as a repair tool for other distros, linux OS learning field, and quite protected OS in my work place.
Can I create my own username on a liveUSB, and delete demo user, without any problem ? Or change “demo” in “my_username” ?
Thanks,
Girafenaine

::Not sure why you would want to do this, but it is possible.
Make sure you boot liveusb with persist_root. I would also suggest you choose F4 nostore option.
Once at desktop, use User Manager to set up a new user.
Edit /etc/slim.conf so default user is now your chosen username.
Reboot (just to check).
If you boot to new user with success, use User Manager to delete old user account (demo).I haven’t checked whether this effects remastering or not.

I am trying to figure this now too. I was using specific login under antiX 17 Live with username ‘francis’ and password with no problem. It seems at the first glance that with antiX 19 strange things appear to happen with this matter but I will figure this out hopefully soon.
One way or the other I agree that user management and specific login under username as you are trying to accomplish is very important.
My question to antiX developers: Is this possible to show username instead of generic ‘–antiX–‘ on top of Fluxbox menu? This would be a reasonable convention that is used in some other windows managers… This would help determine/show under what user is the current session…- This reply was modified 3 years, 5 months ago by olsztyn.

::Just wondering why you want more than one user running live/frugal?
From my perspective IMHO it is not as much a need that multiple users would be logging on to the same instance of Live repeatedly but rather:
– Live instance of OS can be configured (customized) with a composition of software before distribution to other family members/users. Identity of user (home, etc…) should be separate for each user of such individual Live instance, even though such resulting customized/configured Live stick most often would be subsequently used just by one person. Personalized login for each Live instance will accomplish the necessary separation (security, privacy, etc…) of each user of their own Live instance of antiX. So for example passing a laptop between different family members would necessitate using their own Live USB plugs to boot.
– On top of individual personalization described above an encryption for such Live instance (USB plugs) of antiX is necessary to ensure data cannot be read when such Live USB plug is lost, etc… This is to ensure data privacy.
In general from my perspective:
– Thanks to compact nature of antiX Live boots quickly from USB 2.0. This is a significant advantage vs. bloated distributions and now with relatively large capacity tears down a distinction from ‘installed’ systems.
– Live instance is portable across different hardware. You can plug in your individual personalized USB plug into any laptop around and boot your own instance with all personanalized settings, cookies, access to cloud services, etc…I am looking beyond a common use of such OS as to ‘play with’ and prove it can be useful. To me antiX realizes a potential as individual, completely secure and private instance of OS for serious use such as secure banking as an example. For this the above personalization is critical.
One distro/composition of a Linux to accomplish secure connections is TENS (Trusted End Node Security) produced and allowed for general use to public by US Department of Defense and required such Live instance for any government access. You can download TENS from their site and use it. The problem is that due to extreme focus on security such secure instances of Live are completely locked up front and not allowing any customizations. With antiX you can accomplish the same security and create your own customized instance that will be subsequently security locked but also customized to individual, not generic. This is what makes antiX truly useful unlike TENS, where for security customization or any change is not possible. My above explanation is in relation to anticapitalista’s question but I also want to thank skidoo for the tip how to personalize Fluxbox with username.
I will be exploring antiX to the utmost, to realize other advantages but at this point it is my choice as a secure OS to do any serious stuff.
I apologize for this lengthy post, just wanted to get my point across.
My thanks go to antiX developers and antiX leader for such capable and useful OS.Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

::As far as I am concerned, there is no more problem.
I wanted to change the user name from “demo” to “my_user_name” just because “demo” is not a great name to see all your OS along. User management app is able to do it in flawlessly. It changes user home folder name too. I haven’t realize that the user management app under antiX was so simple and powerful (lacks for it in other distros). I did not edit slim.conf at this point.
By the way : Anticapitalista, why did you suggest to boot with “nostore” option ?
Thank you for your help… and for antiX !

::olsztyn, what you described sounds VERY familar to me. Yes, I have booted TENS. Aside from inclusion of httpAnywhere web browser addon, they didn’t put much effort into providing a “secure” user environment. I can’t recall, did they even bother to disallow 3rd-party browser cookies? From memory, it lacked adblocking (uBlockOrigin or any other adblocker addon) and no treatment via HOSTS file. IIRC, they didn’t even bother to disable Flash or Java plugins. If you booted the latest release, betcha the browser is even permissively configured to allow Widevine DRM. (Duh! fingerprints the system by generating an auth keypair derived from drive partition UUID and other system hardware details. As the saying goes, “your USA tax dollars at work”)

::Yes, indeed… Thanks skidoo.
In general, thanks to inclusion of key functionality in antiX, such as ready to go cloning of running system with encryption, locking up so no changes will be permanent without explicit manual root persistence, remastering and user management, antiX has a potential yet to be realized, which goes beyond any other out there…Live antiX Boot Options (Previously posted by Xecure):

Only for first boot so the store folder doesn’t get created under /demo user.
@all
Multi-user frugal/liveusb is pretty cool.
I’ve been experimenting a little with antiX-17.4.1 frugal install (only because I don’t want to touch my antiX-19 installs yet).
Booted with live persistence root only.
As demo user, created two new users (mum and dad) via User management app.
Using User Management app, changed user groups to not allow sudo (Don’t want mum and dad using apt).
Edited /etc/slim.conf and /usr/local/share/live-files/general-files/etc/slim.conf- commented auto_login and default_userRebooted and this time at login screen, I login as mum and set it to use Space-fluxbox, changed the wallpaper etc.
Then did same for dad, but using jwm – no desktop.Rebooted – all mum and dad configs saved – great!
Logged into demo and did a remaster – rebooted and was able to login as mum, dad, demo with all settings saved.
So, in this case, demo acts like a privileged user (can upgrade apps, remaster etc), while mum and dad cannot.
Just don’t tell mum and dad the demo users password! (remember you are prompted to do so when you run persistence for the first time and first boot after remastering)Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

Perhaps not that important in great scheme of things but I happen to agree with Girafenaine that ‘demo’ is not the best choice of name, particularly for administrative authority. I would rather choose something like ‘admin’ imho…

::Try removing demo user and then do a remaster – it breaks (well it broke here)
Later: Actually I tried again, creating an admin user with same permissions as demo, removed demo user, remastered and all is ok with admin user.
