I am trying out Chromium browser.
The current repo version in Synaptic and Package Installer is 73.0.3683.75
I notice that there is an update available to version 87.0.4280.66
I am wondering if the repo needs to be updated with a newer version.- This topic was modified 2 years, 5 months ago by greyowl.

I am wondering if the repo needs to be updated with a newer version. You are correct that the version of Chromium in the stable repository is behind the most currently available release. However the version available is 83.0.4103.116-1~deb10u3, not 73, big difference.
Also if there are any critical security updates Debian is reasonable to update or patch the package with the fix.

::Dell Latitude D600 and D610 laptops (2 GB RAM, 32 bit) – antiX 17
I think latest chromium based browsers require too many new libraries not available in Debian oldstable (antiX 17). Porting won’t be easy, i think.
If you need it, try a chromium appimageantiX Live system enthusiast.

I just did a reinstall with the package installer.
My synaptic and package installer only offer chromium version 73.
I don’t understand why mine is not version 83 like yours.- This reply was modified 2 years, 5 months ago by greyowl.

I don’t understand why mine is not version 83 like yours.Try this instead:
sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get install –reinstall chromium
and see if that makes a difference. Also note that the appimage; I’m running it now and it is Version 89.0.4336.0 (Developer Build) (64-bit).

::@greyowl – You are using antiX-17 so, as explained by Xecure, you can’t get the latest version via apt/synaptic.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

I missed that point too. You still have choices as noted above – the appimage or a newer release that supports more current software.

Says: “You update them manually. This means: if there is an updated appimage file available, you download it and replace the old appimage file with the new one.
“Appimages work as self contained executables. They, by design, exist on their own on your system, in the folder where you put them yourself. There is no software present on your system that would allow to update them automatically.”
“In contrast to appimages, other systems to install software such as APT (Debian, Ubuntu) or the other new distribution formats, flatpak and snap, provide an automated application management framework. These packaging formats represent specific systems through which installed applications can be maintained, checked against a repository and updated according to their specific technologies.”
Since flatpak and snap were mentioned in the quote, let me simply state the opinion that I wouldn’t recommend using them with antiX unless you are quite experienced, have good system backups or you are willing to completely replace your system; it’s possible to have conflicting packages or images on your system with these tools and you may run into situations where these tools, while useful elsewhere, may cause software to be installed that creates package conflicts

For historical reasons, there are some small top level directories. Now the guidance is that new top level directories are for product (e.g. Chrome, Android WebView, Ash). Even if these products have multiple executables, the code should be in subdirectories of the product.

jsonSo. Since 32 bit latest Chromium is needed. Is there such a animal, remember, 32 bit support is being dropped by most modern browsers. No body wan ts to support 32w bit no more. World wants to move on. Screw the have nots. 64bit FTW.
Getting tired. Passing the baton. Hopefully this helps. Chrome Canary browser has some builds. But. Not sure about Linux .

Thanks for the information.
I am running antiX 17 (32 bit)—-I think my system is “stretch”, not “buster”.
So this download (ungoogled-chromium_84.0.4147.135-1.buster1_i386.deb) probably would not work.
