Chromium not working..

Hello,
I have another question for antiX 19 -base- with a Thinkpad T41:
how do i get Chromium installed? The installation apparently works with ‘sudo apt-get install’ or via Synaptic. There is also an entry in the start menu. Unfortunately nothing happens.
The Seamonkey runs well, but is not up-to-date, as the display looks a bit old, especially on Google searches.

The latest upstream version of seamonkey (presently 2.53.8.1) is in the repos, so it is up to date.

Try opening chromium in a browser and see what messages it shows.

Probably your CPU lacks SSE3 support. Now chromium based browsers no longer work on CPUs with SSE2 (and non-SSE3) support.

Hello everyone,

The same problem occurs with the computer Motherboard ECS 865PE-A rev 1.2 15-H70-01120, GeForce4 MX 440 AGP 8x Video Card, Pentium 4 Processor and 1GB DDR RAM Memory) with the ISO “antiX-19-legacy-bet2_386-base.iso” and with the ISO “pseudo-antiX-19-legacy-bet3_x64.iso”. After the Chromium update, the web browser stopped working.

So, anyone who wants to use the Chromium web browser will need an older version of the installation package? What should be the latest SSE2 compatible version?

How can we find out if a package needs SSE2 or SSE3 support?

The information indicated in this thread suggests that Chromium is no longer a Web browser option for some people.

For those situations, I recommend using either Firefox, Palemoon, Seamonkey – and check to see if the Opera browser is affected or not; at least there are alternatives available.

Unfortuntely if the hardware used no longer supports the use of Chromium, the choices are to either use a different tool or acquire hardware that is supported by Chromium.
One viable option is to manually use Google Translate – https://translate.google.com/ – it should work with other Web browsers.

5. Do step 2 in reverse, and re-enable the debian security repo, so you can still receive security updates (all except for chromium).

Warning: You will be installing a no longer supported chromium browser, that will no longer receive security updates, so you may be vulnerable to attacks. It is recommended to instead use a different browser with translation plugin.

Going to http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/c/chromium/, I could see the version prior to 89.0.4389.114-1~deb10u1, unfortunately it doesn’t have .deb files for version 88 .
I tried to repeat the process with version 73.0.3683.75-1~deb9u1.

Acessando o sítio http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/c/chromium/, eu pude ver a versão anterior a 89.0.4389.114-1~deb10u1, infelizmente não tem arquivos .deb da versão 88.
Eu tentei repetir o processo com a versão 73.0.3683.75-1~deb9u1.

I uncommented the debian.list file, saved the file, and re-applied the sudo apt update command to the terminal.

Following your explanations, I tried to install Palemoon – non sse2 version – 32 bit only available in the Package Installer, but it failed and the same happened when trying to install Palemoon from the MX repository.

Oh, what a shame, that it didn‘t work!
Thank you for the effort. I wanted to try to change the file at the weekend (/etc/apt/sources.list.d/debian.list).
At least the Firefox ESR works – there is a translation add-on for this.
I text my results soon as possible 🙂

Four things, @marcelocripe.

1. Change the antiX repository mirror. The evowise mirror has been reported as fraudulent in this thread. Once you solve the mirror issue, install all antiX updates available on felipe’s system (or tell him to do so).

2. I recommend you try palemoon for sse (non sse2). You were probably not able to install it because the antiX repository mirror was broken.

3. To avoid the spam filter blocking your posts, remember to always wrap the code text with the code tags. You can either do it with the “CODE” tags at the top text editor or with
< code > remove-spaces < / code >
and not with the B-QUOTE option. B-QUOTE is mainly used for quoting someone’s text or quoting a website text, and it will not circumvent the spam filter if it contains links (as in this case it contains the antiX repository links, which flagged your post as spam).

4. When you tell me or others that you installed something and it installed OK, we will believe you. There is no need to post all the terminal output code to prove it. We trust your word, so you don’t have to take the effort to copy, format and show the terminal output if it isn’t related to an error popping up. In this case, luckily, there was value in sharing the terminal output, as we can point out the evowise mirror as faulty (and that would lead to not receiving any new antiX packages or updates). But normally it will not tell us anything different from “the installation worked”. As I said, no need to take the extra effort on sharing it.

Back to the main topic.
Unfortunately, there is no fork of chromium I have found that is built on the version 88 (which would still patch future security bugs), to keep SSE2 compatibility. Many browsers have given up on 32 bit systems and old 64 bit CPUs. If someone uses an old Chromium (or any other non-supported browser), please install a plugin to disable javascript (like noScript) to keep your system as secure as possible. Javascript is the main vector of attack for malware on a browser, so disabling it will protect you at least a bit more compared to using it normally.

I agree with Xecure. As I mentioned before, Chromium does not support the hardware you are using (because it does not maintain SSE2 compatibility). Also, as Xecure recommends, I think that it will be necessary to use another Web Browser. Palemoon was mentioned, which is one of the ones I suggested. I’ve used Palemoon and it’s a good browser with many of the capabilities of past versions of Firefox that are friendly to old hardware. Palemoon works with both new and old computers, and though it does not have a few of the absolute newest features, it is still a full-function browser, and therefore a very good choice.

Yesterday Felipe was without internet access due to problems with the internet provider.

Answering by numbering:

1. I changed it again to the repository in Brazil – USP – São Paulo, following the info from mr. Brian. Previously, I had switched to evowise to try to find out if there were problems in the repositories in Brazil, because other programs after installed were not working the same way as with Chromium. What are the main repositories (the ones that receive updates first)?

2. I installed Palemoon (non sse2), the same as the image you posted, the version that was installed is 27.9.4 (32 bit). I have installed the {31AACE3F-736A-591B-AC51-A6EE63004677}.xpi extension, now we just have to learn how to do it. the translation works, we didn’t find an option in the right-click context menu to translate the page, and we didn’t see any option where you can click to translate the page.

3. Unfortunately, the formatting of my post was horrible, it wasn’t my intention, sorry for that. If I edit the previous post, it will definitely go back to the spam box. The “CODE” option includes a scrollbar, while the “B-QUOTE” option does not include this scrollbar.
The reason for my preference for “B-QUOTE” is very simple, Google Chrome and Chromium internet browsers can do the translation (good or bad, from en to pt-BR) and also allow printing to “.pdf” file of the pages of this forum translated. These “.pdf” files are for future reference (mainly for me) and are often shared in the Telegram and WhatsApp groups we participate. Felipe whenever he can help me to do this. The intention of having Google Chrome or Chormium is due to our difficulties with the English language.

4. I thought it was important to share as you can quickly identify where the problem is. I made it a habit to copy the tests and share, they serve as a reference for other people. And it’s really tiring, but it’s worth it if it’s to help other people solve the same problem.

Eu instalei a extensão {31AACE3F-736A-591B-AC51-A6EE63004677}.xpi agora só falta aprendermos a fazer funcionar a tradução, não encontramos uma opção no menu de contexto do botão direito do rato para traduzir a página e não vimos nenhuma opção onde é possível clicar para traduzir a página.
