Just wondering if anyone else is having trouble running chromium. Please see the screenshot for the message claiming “hardware does not support SSE3 instruction..” alongside my cpu information.

The error message seems to have been put in place recently:
      https://salsa.debian.org/chromium-team/chromium/-/commit/836b9da55c776a27d884d0405f385dcb7ef6f12e

The cpu is new enough that it has the necessary instruction set. Chromium opens without problems in ubuntu distributions, so I wasn’t sure which place to mention this- AntiX, Debian, Chromium.. Is it a mistake that occurs during OS intallation?

Hi, is the package ‘sse3-support’ installed?
        Could you post:
        1) your repositories (‘inxi -r’)
        2) and chromium version currently installed?

EDIT: According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SSE3 ‘sse3’ and ‘pni’ are somewhat equivalent. Thus the check in the link you posted (grep for ‘sse3’) seems to does its job wrong, one should most likely use
        grep -E '(sse3|pni)'
        instead.
But that obviously is not your case.

          Hi Johnd,
Specs clearly state your CPU supports SSE3.
you say chromium runs on ubuntu, biggest differences to antiX is newer kernel version,
and GLibs. Ubuntu is based on Debian Unstable.

Maybe the quick, dirty but easiest way to figure out what happens is to make a live stick with antiX
running unstable. If it will run on your system install chromium and see if it will run reliably.
That way you do not risk breaking your present system. And have some confirmation software versions
          are behind your issue.

I will maybe be bumping in to it soon as UngoogledChromium follows and includes the check. Refusing to run
without SSE3 is brutal but intent is to protect users.

If you get a correctly running chromium and really want to, ensure you have a working backup and a live antiX
USB stick then update your kernel. It is not really dangerous but you can “have fun” with a non booting system.
I ran into that several times.

            Hello Johnd.

This topic Chromium not working.. is similar to yours.

Yesterday I noticed the very same problem:

              1. I downloaded from the Italian mirror antiX 21 base
              2. I installed it on an external HD USB using “create Live USB”
              3. I did “sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade”
              4. I installed chromium from “software installer”

when I tried to start the program I received the same message as johnd.

On this same pc with the “traditional” install on the hd all is working (with the chromium version 104.0.5112.79)
now the issue is with the new version 105.0.5195.52.

Moreover I should highlight that my pc seems to have the support for sse3.

              What can I do?

For me chromium on this pc is very important because it is simply perfect to all my needs. In the worst case I’ll follow the solution to stop its updates, waiting to find another browser that fits all my needs 🙂

Thanks in advance for your suggestions

Seems very much like a chromium bug.
You could pin the older working version.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

                  thanks for your answer.
I’ll pin the chromium working version until the problem is resolved, or until I’ll find an alternative browser.

If I understand correctly: There was no check for pni implimented leading to errors on many devices.

Please read the bugreport, it is a chromium issue not Linux kernel.
Cause is a commit to check for SSE3, that intends to protect users from insecure cyphers.
