Would like to give Cinnamon a try and could not get either package installer to work. Packager Installer failed – just asked if I wanted to Exit. Went to Synaptic and “Broken Packages” – could not fix with edit. Held Packages?

Tried LXDE and KDES – they were both successfull.

Tried to fix in terminal with several suggested commands for broken packages fix – no change. All else in package installers works fine.

Is Cinnamon no longer available? Not necessary – just wanted to see it.

      Thanks.

It is because you are running a systemd free distro and we do not allow systemd to pulled into a install through synaptic package manager.
        Because systemd breaks stuff.

        If you wanna run cinnamon.

You would probably save you some grief and just install

        https://www.debian.org/CD/live/

They have Cinnamon Isos on stock and use systemd till the cows come home.
You could even dual boot and compare speed and ease of use if you have the hard drive size to handle this.

For the broken packages fix. Do it in synaptic. You will figure it out in the menu on the toolbar.

            Thank you.

I guess I wrongly assumed that the packages offered in the AntiX Package Installer and those marked “supported” (with the orange dot beside it) in Synaptic were systemd-free.

I have not enabled systemd via the instructions in the MX Wiki and thought that systemd would not automatically be enabled with packages from either installer [only have default debian-stretch].

Some of these other AntiX alternate desktops are on various devices of mine.

If I uninstall the desktops, does systemd go away also? Or need to start over and fresh install again?

“AntiX Package Installer” – “Manage popular packages”
            “Desktop Environment”:

            Cinnamon-Full
            Cinnamon-Standard
            KDE5
            KDE5-lite
            KDE5-standard
            LXDE
            MATE
            Xfce4
            Xfce4-lite

            ——–
The descriptions do not mention systemd nor does “AntiX Howto articles”:

            “Install a Desktop Environment”

“Use the meta-installer included in antiX to install a variety of desktop environments.

The meta-installer is set up to easily install the following desktop environments”

            —————–

            Attached are:

Screenshot of the attempt at fixing through Synaptic mentioned previously.

Screenshot of the desktop offerings on my installation through the AntiX Package installer.
            ——-

            I also tried the terminal:

            sudo apt-get install -f

            apt-get -s -f install

Do these failed attempts mean it is in fact a systemd issue that is preventing the installation? This “broken package”-“Held broken packages” error has happened before, so it would be good to know that that is the reason, and discontinue trying to fix if it comes up again.

Is there another way to determine which packages include systemd components in the installers?

Thanks again. I appreciate your input.

I just managed to install cinnamon via package-installer. Using standard stretch repos.

              Please post the output of

              apt-get -f install and inxi -r

Tried to install Cinnamin Full and Standard on 3 different PCs with same results – All different model T-series x64 ThinkPads that have no problems (known of) otherwise.

I was gonna stay out of this. But his screenshots show synaptic was used first to install Cinnamon. Then he figured he needed to use Package Installer after that.
                        Hence the Broken stuff.

                        If I am wrong. Sorry.

But if you look at His synaptic package manager shot. What do you see?-

You are right that the package manager has built stuff that is systemd free. But this quote below is totally off base here.

those marked “supported” (with the orange dot beside it) in Synaptic were systemd-free.

If I am wrong . Because I don’t trust Debian and synaptic when it comes to systemd and orange dots. Sorry again.

To be honest. I’d start over from scratch if me. But it is your show. I’ll back out of here again.

I am posting on my MX box right now in the shop.

Here is why I said when it says supported. That is subject to Debians, not AntiX, interpretation.-

Thanks for bringing to attention the order of what was installed. As I did not know how to describe what the AntiX Package Installer handled it [Packager Installer failed – just asked if I wanted to Exit]- so it gives a further opportunity to clarify with several screenshots, done on a new partition, same device, of IceWM only – no other desktops installed.
Same order I have done on all other PCs, yet some I had tried several times over and over, thinking I might have done something incorrectly and when getting the screenshot of installer, I may have run it again, after Synaptic – don’t remember.

The only thing I could not get a screenshot of was the Pkg installer running apt-get update with the short blue bar going back and forth.

                            New Partition IceWM only desktop

                            * Attempt through Package Installer first.
                            * Synaptic second.
                            * Synaptic icon legend – don’t know what the orange dot means & had not been able to find a clear answer online- was only guessing.

                            * Terminal findings

Thanks again – hope this is better.

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have

I just installed cinnamon via synaptic – no issues.

You must have installed something (from outside the repos?) that will not allow you to do so.

                                Try

                                apt-get purge cinnamon-*
