Can you install cinnamon with apt-get now?

            If not, I’m baffled.

Tried apt-get install cinnamon and failed again. Result below…

              I am baffled as well.

What I tried next was to take a snapshot of the existing system and then install on the same partition, a fresh 17.1 final install, update and dist-upgrade with no apps and no updated kernel, only update and dist-upgrade and wireless network.

Next install from AntiX Pkg installer full Cinnamon.

Went flawlessly – poked around the desktop.

Next, same partition, reinstalled same 17.1 final, update and dist-upgrade with no apps and only this time installed 4.15.9 kernal.

Going along fine for quite some time and suddenly stops at the point where it is at and seizes everything and must power off now (waited 1/2 hour+ before doing so):

              cinnamon-control-center-data all 3.2.1-3 [2,664kB]
              27% ‘[57 cinnamon-control-center-data364 kB/2,664kB14%] [thunderbird 27.3 M….

Couldn’t read the rest – it was off the screen.

Rebooted, tried to install again and it succeeded.

Switched desktops to Cinnamon and there was an orange notification “Problem during Cinnamon startup” -applets desklets or extensions failed to load -check system log and Cinnamon looking glass log for…”

              Could not find either log.

Var/log/apt/history.log – no errors or fail here.

It might be one of the apps installed on the original install that I could not install it at all on, that prevented the cinnamon desktop install [broken pkgs, etc] maybe – chrome, gimp, xscreensaver, pinta, florence virtual keyboard, redshift (w/geoclue2),pulseaudio – all obtained from default installers.

Could be the kernel update. Could be something entirely different.

Not so enthused with Cinnamon that I would reload the system at every app install to find out.

Going to give up on this desktop. IceWM and Xfce work quite well for me. Just wanted to try it out and that was enough.

There are also some other apps in IceWM that are not working correctly with either kernel – Wireless setup kept freezing – had to power off – could not open text files with leafpad – issues never had before.

Will reload original snapshot – it runs fine without Cinnamon.

Thanks for checking into this for me. I appreciate your time and suggestions very much.
