::I have backported claws-mail 4 (gtk3) from Debian Testing (64bit only for now).
Please test and let me know if they should be moved to main repo.
You’ll have to install the debs manually.https://download.tuxfamily.org/antix/Testing/

::@anticapitalista – Thanks for that. Great work, as always
@Robin – I have antiX 19.x on my desktops, on my 32bits laptop I have antiX 21, but that system is temporarily down, so I can’t test Claws there 🙁

::@anticapitalista
Many thanks for the Backport, Installed, starts ok, could send and receive unencrypted mail,
testing rest will take a while, especially the plugins I have figured out how to use.OT info:
Robin is still fighting hardware issues so unsure if he can join in and test for a while.
His translating work is, along with those assisting of major importance in building a wider
international userbase.
Hopefully we get a better hardware setup together soon.- This reply was modified 1 year, 2 months ago by ModdIt.

::@moddit, do you need equipment? I have some Core2Duo type machines with 3GB of RAM. Small Form Factor desktops. They are free to a good home. Just pay freight and packaging.

::*bump* re testing the claws-mail 4 debs I made.
Unless there are any serious objections, I’m thinking of adding them to the repos (which means existing gtk2 versions will get upgraded).

::Regarding the problems with claws and gmail authentication:
Similar to the process of yahoo pop-mail gmail now provides (and will soon require) an alternative to the “less secure apps” setting on google. One must enable ‘two step verification’ and then generate a unique password for your particular app. Claws uses this password to provide seamless access to gmail.

Gmail pop-mail with Claws 4.0.0 – Oauth2 working well on my system.
(PITA Setting up OAuth 2.0 – https://support.google.com/googleapi/answer/6158849 – was tedious on my under-powered system)

::I prefer using a leased server, but for free (allegedly) privacy-oriented mail I’ve had good luck using older clients with Disroot: https://disroot.org/en/ – they are in Amsterdam.
Signup is not instantaneous; a human volunteer has to review your request, and it may take a day or two.

::@ahoppin, thanks for the pointer to disroot, just took a look at their site, seems a place I might feel at home.

::Claws does work with G Mail, kids use it.
On top of what I wrote you will need to
“Enable less secure app access”I tried to setup my gmail account on the latest Claws that is installed in my antiX 21- I can’t do it. I tried to setup Oauth2 to generate the necessary token to use gmail in Claws- I can’t do it not even if my life depended on it 🙁
I read on the instructions that “Enable less secure app access” will be turned off by google in the next couple of months, Moddit – just an heads up, somewhere around May your kids will begin complaining that they can’t use gmail on Claws.
On my now gone antiX 19 that was on that same netbook, I had gmail working without any problems on Seamonkey e-mail client – a bit more resource intensive than Claws, and also I can’t make the pt spell check work on it…March 16, 2022 at 12:59 pm #79179MemberModdIt
::Hi PPC,
thanks for the heads up.
Will close my ears when the whinging comes 🙂Hopefully at least some users will move to a better more privacy respecting option.
Unlikely they will find anything much worse, except for ms offerings on a windoze

::FWIW, here’s an article about Claws. Some of the alternatives discussed are not available on Linux, as far as I can tell.

::I hope we get some acceptable resolution on this. If not, there are fortunately many Email programs available that will at least offer an alternative to Claws.
For example, there is mutt, Geary, MH, to name three fairly “light” alternatives. Back when I used a UNIX system every day at work, instead of using the standard clients that were available, I configured a TCL/Tk implementation of the Rand MH mail called “exmh”. It was very customizable and I could filter mail into different folders, import it from multiple sites, and even automatically remove certain Email if it was from something I NEVER wanted to read.
Here’s another link that lists a number of Email clients in case Claws is no longer able to do what you want it to do:
https://www.fosslinux.com/48373/best-email-clients-for-linux.htmAnother one, with a different focal point is:
https://www.linuxandubuntu.com/home/best-email-clients-for-linuxHopefully everyone will be able to get the tool they prefer now to work, but in the event of issues, there are MANY alternatives available. At least a couple of them will work well even on older systems.
