      Hi there!

I’m not sure if I messed up a setting on Claws or not, but for some reason when I compose an email now, the spell checker tells me virtually every word I type is misspelled. I know my spelling isn’t the best, but no way is that bad either!

I set the language to en_ca (Canadian English – with me being Canadian and all). Is there some other setting I should be looking for.

Not a critical issue, but it is a bit annoying.

      Thanks in advance!

@mynaardt I’m not sure whether you’ve done anything wrong or not. Frequently when you set up a new (or different) environment, the various tools, including spell checking, have to initialize and also familiarize themselves, not only with what is specifically included in the “dictionary” or spelling directory, but also in the pointers, links, and references the tools contain.

I’m taking a wild, educated guess here, but since you are using en_ca, a couple of things come up – 1) is the en_ca localized version of the spell check also installed? 2) Until recently, were you using a different locale, maybe en_US, or something completely different?

If either of these cases is true, then there is either no up to date information available. Sometimes, even with default language settings, tools take a little while to familiarize themselves with words but once that happens, the number of words marked, indicating their spelling is either incorrect or unknown, will eventually reduce until the majority of words will be correctly recognized.

Even with that said I find things all the time that get red underlined; for example, as I write this, your ID is underlined, but the remainder of my words so far are not, except that I intentionally misspelled a word as I was typing, then corrected it myself, and the underlining worked correctly.

I’m not sure what to suggest, other than to manually check words you’re unsure of with a real dictionary (use a decent web-based dictionary in another web page tab), and add words to your own dictionary until it reliably validates words. Yes, it’s an ugly answer, unless someone else knows of an immediate answer that will quickly yield the expected result.

What antiX are you running? On antiX 23 I can set the claws mail (version 4.1.1) spell checker language in the spell check menu of a mail compose window to en_CA and all English texts I type are not underlined at all, just as it is for en_GB or en_US.

By any chance, might it be possibly you’ve set it to ca only? This will cause mostly everything besides some few words is marked red as spell errors, since ca is not equivalent to en_CA.

Another posibility is, former versions of the spell checker used by claws mail were not ready for en_CA language, in case you use former antiX versions you’ll not have claws mail 4.x present.
