Just in case you find that Midnight Commander is too much …

Use elinks (or lynx etc), but instead of browsing the web, just point it to your present directory (dot) and look around. I do that when I don’t want the full-flavor of MC and am just poking around looking for docs, faqs, readme’s and whatnot in the filesystem directories.

      Very simple:

      elinks .

Use .. to travel up to the parent directory – the usual cli stuff.

OR, if you want to use a browser, just use the file:/// url to point to the internal filesystem and browse around. Sometimes just two forward slashes works, depending on browser

      file:///

Anyway, you guys probably know this, but just wanted to share just in case..

I find mc to be too useful to be without, it’s always on my systems. 🙂

        Linux (& BSD) since 1999

          Oh yeah, Midnight Commander rocks.

Does anyone remember X-tree? Waaay back in my early Slackware days, I remember playing around with Y-Tree. It’s still around, but I’ll have to check and see if it’s in the Debian repos.

If not, ytree is amazingly still active:

It’s so weird to have finger muscle-memory come back after decades sometimes. 🙂

If you like cli file managers, how about nnn and vifm. Both in antiX repos.

Philosophers have interpreted the world in many ways; the point is to change it.

antiX with runit - leaner and meaner.

Did not know that; great addition to MC (and useful if not available)!
              Thank you for the tip(s).
