@ bitjam – Since you thought it might be a firware problem, I went to the dell website to see what help they can be … NONE!!

Find a driver for your Latitude D610
      Keyword :ipw2200
      Category :Firmware
      Operating system :XP
Format :Extracts files directly to local disk.
Show downloads by Service Tag for factory-installed components. What's this?
      Show urgent downloads only

No drivers found. There are no drivers that meet the filter criteria you've applied.

I put XP because they didn’t list Win 7, and this lappy came stock with XP Pro.

Network: Card-1: Broadcom Limited NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCIE driver: tg3
                   IF"eth0 state: down mac: <filter>
                   Card-2: Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG [Calexico2] Network Connection
                   driver: ipw2200
IF: eth1 state: up mac: <filter>

The line IF: eth1 state: up indicates that the card is working, eth=ethernet (wired)
so I would go into wicd and reconfigure it as it should be wireless wlan0, ath0 ,etc
        go menu–>Control Center–>Network–>wicd
after wicd starts on the far upper right part of the window you will see a small down arrow, click
on that and then click on preferences. then enter the wlan0 for the wireless interface under General Settings, then click on the
Advanced Settings and change the WPA Supplicant Driver to nl80211 instead of wext, click ok then click refresh on the Wicd Network Manager.

        cheers,
        ohh

          Thanks ohh;
Control Center doesn’t show a button for wicd. I looked at ceni, which didn’t have anything like you describe. So then I went to configure wpa_supplicant and opened it up. It has a couple of things listed opposite the arrows:
          Adapter:
          Network:
but neither of the arrows will open the list – am I in the right window? and do I need to be root to do this?

@ ohh, bitjam, and all who hopped on to help out – I don’t know what I did right, but all of a sudden that lappy has the net! I am a happy camper now. Thanks for helping out, maybe just messing around with the wpa button woke it up and it started to work, I don’t know, but at least it’s working for now. I’m upgrading it now via CLI 245 things to upgrade – that’ll take a while!

Nice you got your wifi working,
if wicd isn’t installed , maybe you installed the base-iso and was that your intention? Just for information, here is a list of the packages missing on base.

here’s a screenshot showing where the wicd launcher is displayed in the ControlCentre for “antiX 17 Full”

                  .

I wrote a post on how to connect roaming with ceni and wpa_supplicant. Not sure if that would help.

I guess you’re right, my control center doesn’t look like the pic that skidoo posted. … I must have assumed that base meant “everything-you-need” instead of full which I take as meaning “everything-you-need-and-much,-much-more-than-you-really-wanted”! My misteak! My thanks to all who chimed in on this thread. Now I’ll install wicd, etc. and I should be golden if it stops working! As a matter of fact, I think I’ll also try loading it onto a USB stick (if that’s possible) in case I need it again! It’s either that or download the ‘full’ and re-install, and then have to trim it down to what I have now!
