      Try this line in your startup file if you use Compton as your compositor. This won’t provide any “fancy” effects other than transparency, but it will speed up the compositing using OpenGL & the glx backend.

      compton –vsync opengl-swc –backend glx

          /usr/bin/compton –backend glx –paint-on-overlay –vsync opengl-swc

            I don’t use compton or any compositor since it just seems to add more RAM with no gain.
            This is on an old Thinkpad i5
