Yes, I have an old Acer Aspire One and I put a new hard drive in it and installed AntiX along with a few AntiX ISOs. Long story there, but I love MX and AntiX due to how easy it is to create a custom ISO, which I boot from and work mostly from that. Had lots of computer problems in the past….
Anyway, so the computer goes to sleep about every 30 seconds whether I am using it or not. Even during boot! I have tried doing the acpi=off command in GRUB which does work but then the display is wrong, with only 800×600 available. So I am looking for a way to keep it from sleeping without using acpi=off or fix the resolution issue using it. More random information that will probably just cause more confusion instead of helping:
Sometimes the screen never comes back on when I try to wake it from these unexpected sleep sessions.
An older AntiX ISO (19.2 or 19.1) works fine, even though modified. But do any updates and problem is back.
AntiX is not the only distro to have this problem.
And the Aspire One seems to have lots of people confused over this on the ‘Net.
Windows also works fine, no issues other than being Windows.
I have tried editing the laptoplidswitch in logind but the problem still persists.
The ISO file works fine on other computers (bare metal or virtualbox)
I also had problems with internet, but eventually discovered it was due to installing another network app.
The Acer Aspire One is old so of course it’s using the 32bit version.
So, there you have it. There is probably something that gets updated or upgraded between 19.2 and 19.3 that causes this, and it is something used by various other apps such that even just avoiding an upgrade isn’t enough, you need to check on each app you install. Or maybe it’s just automatic? I know it’s an old laptop, but the battery is still great and it’s so small and portable. Any help would be appreciated, thank you all in advance.

You may find the update is pulling in newer Xorg and that is causing troubles.

For the computer you have the debian wiki pages may prove very useful.

          Hi Lobstercat,

In addition to ModdIt’s help, you will certainly receive a lot more help if you post the features of your Acer Aspire One.

Open the terminal and apply the command:

          inxi -Fnz

As to the note from ModdIt, I am very intrigued by that possibility. There are like a million xserver-xorg packages installed, but looking at the “main” ones, I did notice something. Xserver-xorg is the same version on both, 1:7.7+19, but xserver-xorg-core is slightly different. While all versions are 2:1.20.4-1, the AntiX 19.3 and the troubled 19.2 version both have an added “+deb10u2” so could that be making the difference? Or should I be looking at a different package? Using apt-cache policy, I see all available versions appear to have the +deb thing at the end, so how or where would I go to downgrade that package, if that is the package I should downgrade? If you don’t know all of that part no problem I’m sure I can google it and find out, really just asking if that would be the package I should try changing, if you think that could be the culprit. Thank you all again so much for your help, I really appreciate it!!!

The graphics part is totally different,
              the older version that works:

              Graphics:

Device-1: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics driver: i915
              v: kernel

              Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: intel

              unloaded: fbdev,modesetting,vesa resolution: 1024×600~60Hz

              OpenGL: renderer: Mesa DRI Intel 945GME x86/MMX/SSE2 v: 1.4 Mesa 18.3.6

the updated version that doesn’t work right:

              Graphics:

Device-1: Intel Mobile 945GSE Express Integrated Graphics driver: N/A

              Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.20.4 driver: intel,vesa

              unloaded: fbdev,modesetting resolution: 800×600~N/A

              OpenGL: renderer: llvmpipe (LLVM 7.0 128 bits) v: 3.3 Mesa 18.3.6

The vesa driver shouldn’t be loaded, astonishing that this happens during an update.
xserver-xorg-core is probably the triggering reason.

I wonder what would happen if you blacklist the vesa-driver.

Or might better, try to create and use a /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf
              described here

I have the same problem as the OP. I tried the stuff mentioned in this thread, but never was able to solve the problem. I have, however, found a workaround, and so I wanted to share it with anyone who is experiencing the same problem.

                Edit /etc/elogind/logind.conf

                sudo geany /etc/elogind/logind.conf

                Find the following line:

                `
                #AllowSuspend=yes

Uncomment the line and change “yes” to “no” so that it looks like:

                AllowSuspend=no

Save and reboot. The upside is that the computer no longer puts itself to sleep every 30 seconds. The downside is that the computer no longer puts itself to sleep. However, power manager utilities still work, so one can still suspend the computer manually.

Maybe someone with time and doesn’t mind testing, can try backing up the system, then removing elogind (which would install consolekit)
                  sudo apt purge elogind
install acpi-support (if not installed already)
                  sudo apt install acpi-support
and reboot. And see if they also experience the same issue of constant suspends every X seconds.

As systemd’s logind tries to also manage ACPI events, instead of delegating the work to others, the inherited behavior of elogind may be the cause of this issue.

I gave it a try. Purging elogind and installing acpi-support had the same effect as my workaround.

Thanks for the feedback. If you then edit /etc/default/acpi-support
                      sudo geany /etc/default/acpi-support
and enable LID_SLEEP=true, and then reboot, does the issue appear again? If not, does the laptop sleep when the lid is closed or is this option completely ignored?
