Thanks to all contributors for the solution above, it worked for me also.

Is it too much to hope that a similar and maybe related solution might exist, for the failure of certain releases to show desktop icons placed in desktop folder using rox filer? I have a pc with 19.3 installed and which does show the requested icons, one of two reasons that I do not move up a release. I have another almost identical pc with 21 installed which does not show these icons. I have found it to be almost pot luck whether icons will or will not show after I migrate to a newer version or a newer release.

I realise that many users do not use desktop icons and experts do not like them, there being a fine menu hierarchy and a taskbar where icons can also be placed. But I like them and feel that if a facility is offered and fails to work, it may be concealing some worse trouble.
