Hello antix users. Yesterday, I have found my old Lenovo S10e Idepad notebook and decided to “revive” it. I have found out that antix distro is recommended for old computers, so I decided to give it a try. And indeed, the notebook is working again, and quite comfortably with new Linux Antix distro.I have installed libreoffice 6.2 since it is the last version that can work on x86 machines.
Since I’m MS Windows user with very limited experience with Linux, I have immediately notice that some desktop functions (Rox -icewm) don’t work like in windows or other distro like Linux Mint.
First, single click open file instead of select it. I have tried to change this in Rox Palen options, but that works only on desktop background icons, but not in Rox file manager.

The biggest problem is the way how Copy option works. When I try to copy a file by right click with mouse and choose Copy, immediately new window is open in which I need to specify destination path. This is very annoying. What I want is Windows way, right click, Copy, navigate to the destination folder and there right click/Paste.

      Is that possible in antix?
Please have a look at the attached picture.
This is my very first experience with antix, so I know there must be some learning curve.

      Thank you all for help.

Rox filer is a bit different to “normal” File Managers. When you copy, it asks where you want it to be pasted.

For better experience, use SpaceFM instead (recommended).
I recommend you read this article by PPC first:
Short essential how-to list for the complete Linux newbie
There you will see how to change the default File Manager, and other basic stuff.

Meanwhile, launch App Select and search for SpaceFM.
To change one-click to double-click (I do this on every installation),
On Rox Filer: Open roxfiler, right-click on an empty space, select Options. In the first tab, disable Single-click navigation.
On SpaceFM: Open SpaceFM, in the top menu go to view > Preferences. In the fisrt tab, disable Single click opens files.

I agree with Xecure that SpaceFM feels more normal for people used to MS Windows. I have to use MS Win for work, so what feels good to me is when they operate as similarly as possible in terms of what do I need to do to accomplish a task. I always disable the single click opens files. I also turn Automount off. The other thing I do is go to Preferred Applications in the control center and change the default file manager to /usr/share/applications/spacefm.desktop

I noticed you downloaded Libreoffice 6.2.0 Was there a good reason you didn’t just install the newest version from the Package Installer (on system tab in control center)? Its listed under Office. antiX keeps that pretty up to date.

I’d suggest installing things from there, first, and if you don’t find it there, then look on Synaptic. Installing via other methods can cause troubles for that application or the system if they conflict.

I’m finding this amusing; I learned UNIX and MS/DOS at around the same time ~1982. I was a mainframe developer before that but I had an interest in microprocessor components and I had used them in the university and looking for ways to incorporate them into enterprise systems.

1982 was when I stopped being an every day mainframe developer and became a system engineer to investigate and recommend new technology, such as PC desktop and UNIX department systems. We investigated 3 tier clent-server computing before that was a common term or a commercially available technology.

Needless to say when I found out about Linux it led me to purchase my own system.

Guess wem all see this different. I used windows for work hours, a relief to get back to linux on which I created a lot
of tools for work improvement, meant redefining star VBA but worked well.

Single click is no problem if you use the method for a couple of hours it becomes normal, double clicking drives me nuts.

I use rox almost all of the time, love the speed and effiency..

You can open 2 Rox windows and left click hold, drag itm to copy, within same window drag for example a
file to a folder, very like older win versions. Keyboard shortcuts for cut paste copy are same as win, or NT MS DOS.
NT is still the basis of win 10.

Hello guys, and thank you all for your replies. I am a complete noob when it comes to antix, until yesterday I’ve never heard of it. I’m not a complete beginner in linux. Many years ago I used Red Hat 9.0 Shrike on my work, so I went through basic education of rpm package management and installation, setting up ftp an similar and basic use of vi editor. So basic concept of Linux file system is familiar to me.

I have decided to try antiX only because I found this distro recommended for the notebook I’m currently use, and that is 11 years old Ideapad S10e with Intel Atom N270 CPU (I have upgraded it to 2 GB of RAM).

I have downloaded Libreoffice 6.2 manually and installed it with dpkg -i *.deb command, only because up to date version is 64 bit, and from v6.3 Libreoffice is only available as 64 bit. On the other hand, Intel Atom N270 is pure 32 bit CPU, therefore, I need to use 32 bit software.

This Copy/Paste thing is pretty much annoying to me, because I’m not only used to MS Windows, but also because it immediately asks me for the destination and there is no such thing as option to navigate through file system. Basically, I need to know exact path of the destination. So indeed, I used drag&drop method. I’m pretty excited about antiX distribution, because my old notebook is not dead anymore. It is annoying when try to watch youtube videos, but normal browsing, chat and using this forum is going without any problems.
I have installed libreoffice 6.2 in order to make documents and spreadsheets if needed.

Even though this is considered a lite version of Linux, it still has many (too many) options regarding Desktops look & feel.

                Regards,
                Askic

You can see I speak the truth: https://packages.debian.org/search?suite=buster-backports&arch=i386&searchon=names&keywords=libreoffice
You will see that Debian’ buster-backports repository has Libreoffice 7.0.3 for 32 bit systems. If it is in Debian, it is in antiX.

It is annoying when try to watch youtube videos

You could see if using SMTube (installed in antiX) or some other means recommended in the forum can give you a better youtube experience. You may be able to take better advantage of your limited hardware. HTML5 rendering uses too much CPU compared to streaming youtube through video players.

Let us know if there is something else you want to know.
                  Welcome to antiX!

PS: even if you are not a linux newbie, you are an antiX newbie. You may be used to Desktop Environments, but antiX uses Window Managers (to keep it fast and light), so sometimes there is a roundabout way to get the same things done. Have a glance at the topic I linked on my previous answer. It may really help speed up some things.

                    Thanks for your feedback.

I think that it is important to make sure that the visible interface to the system and the programs is simple.

One thing that might help is if we put the primary (simple) applications in prominent view and categorize everything else in an advanced applications folder hierarchy.

Before the next release, let’s collectively come up with a usable organization that places priority to display of the core simple applications and intelligently places everything else where it can be found but doesn’t overwhelm new users.

I will create a new topic in the development section to recommend better usability.

Yes, I understood the explanation and drag & drop technique or keyboard shortcuts and I’m going to try to use SpaceFM. SpaceFm behaves exactly how I wanted. Space-icewm is now my default desktop.

                      Thank you.

This is strange, if I try to execute upgrade command I get notification that newest version is already installed:
                        $ sudo apt-get upgrade libreoffice

Nope. Unexpected (by you), but not “strange”.

                            https://backports.debian.org/

You are running Debian stable, because you prefer the Debian stable tree. It runs great, there is just one problem: the software is a little bit outdated compared to other distributions. This is where backports come in.

Backports are packages taken from the next Debian release (called “testing”), adjusted and recompiled for usage on Debian stable. Because the package is also present in the next Debian release, you can easily upgrade your stable+backports system once the next Debian release comes out. (In a few cases, usually for security updates, backports are also created from the Debian unstable distribution.)

Backports cannot be tested as extensively as Debian stable, and backports are provided on an as-is basis, with risk of incompatibilities with other components in Debian stable. Use with care!

It is therefore recommended to only select single backported packages that fit your needs, and not use all available backports.

packageinstaller will (automagically) temporarily enable the backports respository as a software source, then it will retrieve and install the requested package, then it will again disable the backports respository in the configured software sources for your system.

Totally agree! When I first started using it, it was a much cleaner distro to use, but as time has gone by, it has had lots added to it – too much in my opinion, which is adding to confusion from new users – too many choices can be a bad thing.

This is precisely the critical trade-off between light, nimble tools and “familiar”, classic tools.

Some things we may be able to tweak to keep things light and simple. At some point we have to draw the line; our partner distribution MX Linux may provide a useful alternative for some people while our own antiX approach is perfect for others (like our core user community).

I’m pretty excited about antiX distribution, because my old notebook is not dead anymore. It is annoying when try to watch youtube videos, but normal browsing, chat and using this forum is going without any problems.

Modern browsers often place a heavy demand on an old system. Add into the mix another demanding task (video viewing within a modern browser) on top of that and poor performance is frequently the result on old kit.

Try Streamlight from the antiX repos. It can be installed via apt or antiX Package Installer. Videos from various sources can be viewed and/or downloaded but it is not intended to work around protected videos. It works OK on most YouTube videos and is a good way to watch guidance videos about antiX.

                                  Abstract from antiX FAQ
“Streamlight can be used in partnership with almost any web browser, even those that cannot natively handle videos. It is also possible to use it without any web browser. It will work with any application in which your cursor can highlight the address of a video. For example a word processed document, a PDF file, a plain text email, or a terminal command line.

Because it is so economical in its use of your system resources, Streamlight is equally well suited to both modern powerful kit, and older less capable kit.”
