From the Debian mailing list (Sid users beware):

I have uploaded Perl 5.36 to Debian unstable, starting a 600+ package
transition. Wide uninstallability is to be expected in sid for the next
few days until the necessary rebuilds have been completed. Please avoid
unnecessary uploads of affected packages [1] until the transition is
over and perl has migrated to testing. There is no need to submit bug
reports about the uninstallability of related packages during this
      transition.

See the “perldelta” document [2] for information
      on upstream changes since 5.34.

      Happy hacking,

      Niko

Thanks Brian, sounds like things get, –interesting. Packages move to testing following below criteria.

1/The package has been in “unstable” at least for 2-10 days (depending on the urgency of the upload).
2/The package has been built for all the architectures which the present version in testing was built for.
3/Installing the package into testing will not make the distribution more uninstallable.
4/The package does not introduce new release critical bugs.

        Point 3/ is pretty ironic.

Yeah, this may be a time for avoiding updating software for 2-3 weeks IF you use software from either Sid or Testing – that is UNLESS you want to see what happens when you try to update software that uses Perl and either Sid or Testing!

I’ve done stuff like that a few times in the past just to actually see how messed up things can get; HUGE caveat: I had plenty of systems AND backup software available so I was well prepared to experiment; if it’s your only system I wouldn’t do it without more than one way to recover – in case the backup and recovery is faulty – always give yourself alternatives if you experiment!
