Back in January, I mentioned some difficulty and frequent crashes with my Dell D620, in another thread (https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/consequences-of-browsing-on-old-equipment/page/2/#post-75455).

The problem affected both AntiX 17 and 21, whether installed on SSD or run as LiveUSB.

In case it might be helpful to someone else, I think the main issue was due to instability of the clocksource. From reading the dmesg and message logs, it seems that the system prefers tsc as clocksource, and returns to it even after declaring it unstable and setting another clocksource.

The fix was to edit /etc/default/grub, by adding two kernel parameters:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=”clocksource=hpet notsc” (After saving the file, run: update-grub at command line.)

(On my system, available clocksources included tsc, jiffies, hpet and acpi_pm.)

The system still occasionally hangs (at random points) during boot-up, but once up and running, it seems to be pretty stable, now.

I suppose, the real test will be to see if it keeps working, now that I have declared it fixed!!

@DaveW: Your system, the Dell D620, was a very good laptop in its prime. At one time or another, I think I’ve used the D600, D610, D620, and D630.
Today I have a Dell Inspiron 5558 in my current collection, along with the Lenovo X201 (another workhorse from that era).

Since I don’t have any of the previous D600 series systems in my remaining collection, I can’t tell you with certainty what’s going on.
In days past, I didn’t have to use any extra boot flags, safe mode or special consideration, but the Linux kernel has evolved a LOT from the days when my X201 and your D620 were two of the best laptops in their era.

Thank you for your suggestion; I’m glad it works. You may also want to experiment with noacpi; I’ve had to use that more and more often in recent years.

        Best wishes!
