I was having issues with gaming using wine on this old machine because wine wanted to use hardware rendering opposed to software. I was able to fix this issue by doing the following.

      wget http://ftp.br.debian.org/debian/pool/main/m/mesa/libgl1-mesa-swx11_10.3.2-1+deb8u1_i386.deb
      dpkg –force-all -i libgl1-mesa-swx11_10.3.2-1+deb8u1_i386.deb

Rebooting X, and launching the game Half Life without issues! Sweeet!

EDIT: Also, Quake II plays really nice even with software rendering. Some of the native games that need opengl are not installing however due to conflicts with the software vs hard rendering. I am still trying to figure that out so I can play armagetronad.

I was able to install this package,

        https://packages.debian.org/sid/x11/xserver-xorg-video-mach64

And I modified my xorg to use the mach64 driver and am getting 40fps in glxgears. But gaming in software mode is still much faster. Although, I am now able to play some armagetron advanced. 😀

An important note on getting glxgears to run. Only adding the unstable repos and installing xserver-xorg-video-mach64 version 6.9.6-1 will work for some reason with the ati rage mobility card in this system.
