      Hello,

      I built Emacs 29 and part of the build includes creating .desktop files for it. However, these files do not start Emacs. I can click them on the menu, and various places I moved them (e.g., /usr/share/applications/antix) – no joy. Emacs itself runs fine from a command line.

      I’ve compared properties, ownership, permissions, text of the files themselves, to working shortcuts. They look correct in every respect. I’ve never had this happen. I’ve made these files by hand before and they just work. (However, that was always in XFCE.) What is the mojo to get these files to execute on demand here?

      Thanks.

        Show us one. Either copy & paste between CODE markers, or attach to the post…

          Been there, gave up, I use the application from control center, add to personal menu, take any application, change name, path, icon, refresh menu.

            Try something like this- it should run any cli command stated in the Exec line (between the ‘ and the ; signs):

            [Desktop Entry]
            Version=1.0
            Name=Emacs
            Comment=Run Emacs
            Exec=bash -c 'emacs;$SHELL'
            Icon=utilities-terminal
            Terminal=true
            Type=Application
            Categories=Application;
