is it possible to disable two desktops and just have the one? i never use more than one anyway

Hi, you need to edit the appropriate configuration file (specific to each desktop-environment, such as JWM/IceWM/fluxbox etc.) to set the number of desktops to 1.
Hence the question by @anticapitalista concerning which desktop[-environment] you use.
I’m using JWM, I solved my issue by doing this
“Open file /root/.jwmrc-tray in your editor. Locate a line indicating “Pager”. Now type
<!– in front and –> behind it so the line looks like this:
<!– <Pager/> –>
Save.
Restart jwm.”
