I’ve tried to post 3 reviews on Distrowatch- one for b2, b3 and now the final antiX 19- not one got published there… Anyone else has that problem?
Also, found this review was a bit strange (the last part, about setting up wi-fi):
Version: 19
Rating: 9
Date: 2019-10-22
Votes: 7Excellent job! Much better than previous version 17.4.1
pros: easy to install (Dell Inspiron N5010 4GB RAM), multiple users configuration now working perfecty,
cons: (maybe my fault..) I had some problem to set up a wifi connection by means of the GUI. Solved by CLIConnman is the best Gui way ever (at least in antiX) to connect to a network- Never had a problem with “setting up” a connection (I may have to turn wifi on/off sometimes to get wifi back, but that’s not a “setting up” problem). And to be honest I really don’t know how to set a connection using the CLI, I would have to look that up on-line.
But, at least, another happy “costumer” 9/10 is a good review!P.

::If you read a good wiki entry on wpa_supplicant (like wiki.archlinux.org) and how to configure it, and have net-tools installed as well, you will never need a gui again. Connman is a bit better than wicd but they are both sluggish, they take too much output out and give you little feedback of what is going on.
For ethernet most of us get by with dhcpcd. For something more complex you probably know more of what you need.anti-X - Adélie - obarun - systemd Free Space

::It’s not up to me, but I think we should be aiming higher than 9.
There aren’t that many problems, and if we could cure a few more of them, I would expect it to result in more 10’s.

::A specialty distribution like antiX is very difficult to achieve a high rating. Sure, a ten would be nice. A nine is very good. I’d rather have the kind of features we have than compete with commodity systems for high rating. It’s not my decision to decide what to do but I am happy with the results of the current release.

::1 I think some people may experience some problems installing and they figure them out and finalize it and are happy and give it a 10. Other get it right the first try, they boot, but didn’t like the graphical part of the installation so they give it a 5. Distrohoppers who think they can start a gui, click install, and magically they will get a system and a happy face telling them to reboot and this is their criterium for judging a distro.
2 You can’t please them all and you shouldn’t even try to please them all because that specific effort leads you in changing your character, and a distro should have a character, and be stable holding this character. Distros that are run like multinational corporations (Manjaro comes to mind) make sudden moves, without even providing much explanation/justification, and consciously they might lose 20% of their faithful users but to the advantage of getting 40% more in the short term. And that is OK with their walmart logic because walmart is a winner, the neighborhood grocery/deli is a loser.
3 Competing for popularity on distrowatch is a joke. People don’t click on Debian much, they click on MX. Because they don’t know what MX is, but they know debian. They see MX being popular (many unique hits) so they try and install it. Half the list of the top 100 are really debian/arch forks with a theme/facelift/desktop configurations, funky bg, icons, most don’t even have a repository or make a single package, but they are popular.

::I speak spanish, and for me was easier conect my PC to wifi with ceni, because “passphrase” word of connman. When I realized that “passphrase”=”password” it was too easy. Translating to spanish “passphrase” is something like a sentence, not a single word (alphanumeric), and it confuses me… silly me! Now I think that connman is easier than ceni. Some easy things for non-english speakers become difficult. I am not too experimented and installation was very easy, some people wants everything done…
Nº12 is great!!! I think that this is an amazing distro, and the popular ones can’t compete in features with antiX like masinick said- This reply was modified 3 years, 6 months ago by Sito75.

::By the way the Ceni network manager is an excellent tool, not fancy, just effective.

::I wish that the wicd tool kept up with current state of the art. It was a decent tool that could have been improved with just a few tweaks. It offered both command and graphical interfaces.
Tools like Network Manager and Connman took over. I’ll use Ceni as long as it remains available.

::Now I think that connman is easier than ceni.
For those who would like to have to connman “icon” in their systray, edit the ~/.desktop-session/startup file
# Puts connman monitor icon on the taskbar cmst -m &This is one thing I had to fix as this file stored the old option.

Thanks for the information. From a usability standpoint, connman does make things easier, though I still like the flexibility of Ceni and also the feedback as the connection is esttablished. Nice to have choices, and we certainly have a wealth of choices, for which I am thankful.

a word is a word and a phrase is a phrase, but in router/modem language the password for wifi has been known to be called passphrase, maybe because it can include blanks in between words. I have also seen “keypass”, I can’t remember where, maybe android because I don’t have one 🙂
The only thing I know in Spanish is “fascista, sexista, tu eres el terrorista” (corrections welcomed), a companera from Basque country used to sing it while we were walking by cops.

::I looked at the reviews and if better review numbers were desired, I would say consider waiting till new releases were more stable before posting to distrowatch.
As one would expect, people were finding more problems in the alpha and early beta’s, and that drags down the distro’s overall ratings.
It’s just an idea. I suppose it depends on what is the higher priority, getting it out far and wide early on, or getting better review numbers.

::It’s not my decision to make but I prefer flexible software that has plenty of community participation and testing. Ratings aren’t totally useless, but they are not the ultimate measure of real value and worth. That comes from the community that actively participates in the development and testing, then feedback and appreciation. I think that we have a great measure of this. The PCLinuxOS and Puppy efforts are two other projects that appear to have similar communities (though the project goals are different).
I’m quite happy with the community and the results of our collective efforts.

I agree 100%. Ratings are not the ultimate measure.
Other’s opinions should not be used to decide if something is for you. Form your own opinion by trying it out. Use it. Ask questions. Learn. Contribute. I don’t think I’ve ever found a 10 out of 10, There is always some defect. But, so what? To me it’s not about being perfect but being accommodating/open and useful. I’m personally amazed with antiX but if I were to write a review maybe I wouldn’t give it a 10. A rating is only a partial view.
