I am installing the latest version of antiX (19.2) on an old Dell Inspiron 8100. So far, everything seems all right, except for a Python problem while installing a LibreOffice extension. But the topic of this message is something else.
Upon typing the command “lsmod”, I had the surprise to see the following modules being listed:
irda 151552 1 smsc_ircc2
smsc_ircc2 28672 0These are irda modules used to drive the infrared port — which I know from previous installations of Debian on old machines. What baffles me is that irda software is supposed to have been eliminated from Debian 10 after the lack of upgrades made it incompatible with the recent versions of the kernel. And antiX 19.2 is based on Debian 10…
How come that software appears to be included in antiX 19.2? True enough, a command “locate irda” returns a long list of kernel modules — but configuration files such as /etc/default/irda-utils are nowhere to be found, and the standard-configured Synaptic repositories under antiX do not provide for tools like irda-utils or ircp-tray.
So is infrared really working on antiX 19.2, and if so, how to operate it? Or is it some completely forgotten cruft from an earlier antiX version that is yet to be cleaned up?

Half correct.
A. antiX is based on Debian 10 (correct)
B. antiX kernels are NOT based on Debian kernels. So, if Debian has removed certain kernel modules, it doesn’t matter as antiX doesn’t use Debian kernels. If yu want to use Debian kernels yourself, install them from the Package Installer. So is infrared really working on antiX 19.2, and if so, how to operate it?
No idea. The modules sre there, but now you need a program to make use of them.
