I am trying to learn to use apt tools for checking and fixing dependencies. The man pages note the use of apt-cache depends and apt-rdepends to list the dependencies of a package. They also mention apt-rdepends with an -r option to list the packages that a package depends upon.

Both apt-rdepends and apt-cache depends report that libseat1 is dependent upon elogind.

I thought that libseat1 was part of a replacement for elogind and libelogind0.

Appreciate explanation from someone who understands this.

      Thanks.

        apt-cache show libseat1

Description: flexible user, seat and session management library
This library provides runtime access to user, seat and session management. The
backend server used is configurable at runtime. Currently implemented backends
        are seatd, elogind or systemd-logind

so libseat1 depends on EITHER seatd OR elogind OR logind

          Hi iznit,

Thanks for providing that. There are many apt tools. In searching for what to use to show dependencies and reverse dependencies, I found suggestions to use apt-rdepends and apt-cache depends. It wasn’t obvious to me from the “printouts” from those two tools that EITHER elogind or seatd was enough support for libseat1.

I just rechecked the printout from apt-cache depends for libseat1 and that displays “|” before the listings of elogind and of seatd. I guess that indicates the “either..or” relationship.

          I have marked this “solved”.
