Sorry to bother you again. But does Wingrid work? Not on my system.

        Hi Aleph*,
please let us know which is your desktop preference. Should you be using ICEWM you can right click
on a titlebar, a menu will open, going down that will open a submenu with a tiling option.

If you really need wingrid someone who has or is using it will be a better helper than me.

The way I have ICEWM setup applications open at a given size and placement on a specified desktop. Some
        applications open automaticaly
on login, one is claws which also downloads my mail as soon as it is running with an internet connection.

You might like to read through a forum thread:
one screen two application split equally – IceWM Tiling [SOLVED]
There is useful info and insight in how the tiling menu came to be implimented and some more on ICE Shell commands,
some commands and options seem hidden in darkness. To me anyway.

Wingrid works for me, icewm, antix 19 and 21.

You could try putting the following in your .icewm/keys file

          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Home” icesh -f sizeto 49% 49% top left
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Up” icesh -f sizeto 100% 49% top left
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Prior” icesh -f sizeto 49% 49% top right
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Right” icesh -f sizeto 49% 100% top right
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Next” icesh -f sizeto 49% 49% bottom right
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Down” icesh -f sizeto 100% 49% bottom left
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_End” icesh -f sizeto 49% 49% bottom left
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Left” icesh -f sizeto 49% 100% top left
          key “Ctrl+Alt+KP_Begin” icesh -f sizeto 49% 49% center

It will give the same functionality using icesh. Obviously you can change the actual keys used. The example above uses the keypad.

The way I have ICEWM setup applications open at a given size and placement on a specified desktop.

Could you give an example? Say I want Links2 to open up on current workspace in a central window that leaves two “columns” on either side, to increase readability on a widescreen monitor. If that makes any sense.

Yes, sorry. Thanks for the help, folks.
Moddlt, I’ve never used that function before and it’s very useful too!
The problem was that reading file:/usr/share/antiX/FAQ/wingrid.html
I read that to use Wingrid you only have to press Ctrl+1 (2, 3, 4…) but when I looked at the Keys file, I found out that the combination is “Alt+Ctrl+1” (2, 3, 4…).

              Solved 🙂

Have to tax my memory a bit as setup long ago. There is a subject thread in the forum Autostart applications help please
Tired now so hope what I write is clear, if not please ask then I can do step by step on a fresh live icewm setup.

This is trying to give a quick and easy method.
Put a window where you want it and size it as wished, when you move it again to final size or just make a bit smaller or larger
using your mouse from the bottom right gripper area window the size and position data will be shown on bottom of screen.
                Please note the data.

enter xprop in the terminal press enter you will have an X shaped cursor, click in the window you positioned to get the propertys.
To make it easier I opened a links 2 window. Read in the terminal to find WM name and Class, example below.

                WM_NAME(STRING) = “Links”
                WM_CLASS(STRING) = “Links”, “Links”

As an example which you should add to your
/home/yourusername/.icewm/winoptions Substitute your noted window size and position data (on screen geometry)

                Links.Links.geometry: 941×1173+0+0
                Links.Links.workspace: 1

Can not remember if you will need to logout and back in first try icewm --restart in the terminal
then open links 2 it should follow the settings for desktop and size.

Should you want to use the method with libreoffice you will need to prefix the start with --norestore as LO
remembers size and position itself and is troublesome without given option. Just make sure autosave is set to a
short intervall as otherwise work could be lost in case of power outage etc.

Thank you! That worked like a charm.

Added Note for later readers: some programmes save own size and position data, maybe more than the one which
was slightly troublesome: Libreoffice. For Libreoffice I set HideEula=1 Logo=0 in soffice.rc
Sample set start this way replacing information to the requirements of your installed version, line will vary
depending on if you installed from a LO org download or packet installer..
                    libreoffice7.3 --norestore --calc

Thanks for. Excellent work of ICEWM devs and help from BobC
