::There are many posts on antix core and installing desktops. You can learn a lot from them:
https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-19-core-mate-de/https://www.antixforum.com/forums/topic/antix-core-failure-of-desktop-to-boot/
My recommendation is to first experiment on a virtual machine so that you do not suffer as much while trying new stuff.

::I just followed the “easy way” christophe used. (All tests on a virtual machine)
After installing core (I supose after Part I to II of dolphin_oracle’s videos)
1. Install xorg
sudo apt install xorg2. Then use cli-aptiX to install your desired packages.
sudo cli-aptiX
In “Sugested GUI packages”, I went with the minimum. (47. spacefm, 87. lightdm, 143. fluxbox)
I marked each package separately and then installed them all together.3. quit cli-aptiX and reboot the system
sudo rebootThen everything worked well.
Hope this helps.

My thanks… the stuff in your post is gold to me.. sure would be nice to get an up-dated list of posts related core installs so newbies like me can learn how to do it right.… I’m trying to learn core installs because I ran into a nightmare using ceni to get my wifi to work after installing 19.2.1 antix 19 386-base
and also after installing the previous 19 version.
Co-incidentally, the mikey777 post you cited reported similar problems with ceni :
” I ditched ceni and finally used wicd to connect to wifi – it worked well”After lots of forum feed-back, the only way i could get my wifi to connect and hold onto the connection was by :
(1) installing 17.4.1 base-386 … which got my wifi up in 1 minute or so
(2) installing 19.2.1 core-386 … which also got my wifi up based on output from CLI commandsSo i decided that (2) was perhaps the wiser way to go, but this obviously forced me into learning how to do antix core installs,
But, until your post, the only tutorials I could find were the Dolphin_Oracle videos cited in my original post. Many thanks for the much simplified core install you suggested.
I will give it a try along with 19.2.1 386-core and, as mikey777 recommends ‘ ditch ceni ‘ in favor of wicdApril 16, 2020 at 9:34 pm #34872ModeratorBobC
::Ceni and Wpa_GUI are very memory efficient compared to Wicd, but you are rolling your own, so it should be what you like it to be…

I ‘ve made substantial progress following you advive
I can now boot to fluxbox and my wifi is working fine (incredibally with ceni, which has never worked before on this same box)I used cli-aptiX to install (47). spacefm, (87) lightdm, (143) fluxbox) and ALSO 9 (Dillo browser) and 150-159 (various antiX system tools)
When I R-click on desktop, fluxbox menu comes up BUT
1 Applications > Shells > Bash does nothing … same for the other shells (Dash and sh)
Can’t do much without a terminal
2 Window Managers > Fluxbox ..sends error message “CANT FIND APP TO SET WALLPAPER…” and advises me to install Eterm
3. Also, spaceFM is nowhere to be found as are apps 150-159 that I requested via cli-aptiXFluxbox menus for Configuration, Styles and Workspaces are all populated with tools and
Dillo web browser appears under Applications > Network > Web BrowsingWithout a terminal I’m dead in the water

::Without a terminal I’m dead in the water
When having problems with the desktop, linux always gives you possibilities.
Right now you are in tty7 (Control+Alt+F7). You can move to tty1 (Control+Alt+F1) which will “load” a text base terminal (you can always return to your “desktop” with Control+Alt+F7)
Log in with your user and password and now you can do things in terminal.Starting from core the first time is hard. I think you could make it as antiX-like as possible and start experimenting from there. You may follow this mini-guide if you want, I will guide you to a minimally antiX-like fluxbox session for you to start experimenting. If you feel too lost right now, maybe this will help you. You can stop at any step of the way and continue with your own experiments.
0. Move to tty1 and log in as your user.1. Install RoxTerm and antiX’s custom fluxbox, spaceFM and rox “configurations”
sudo apt install roxterm desktop-defaults-rox-antix desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix desktop-defaults-spacefm-antix2. Make .fluxbox folder backup, copy antiX custom fluxbox, spacefm and roxterm configurations
cp -r ~/.fluxbox/ ~/.fluxbox-old cp -r /etc/skel/.fluxbox/ ~/ cp -r /etc/skel/.config/roxterm.sourceforge.net/ ~/.config/ cp -r /etc/skel/.config/spacefm/ ~/.config/Now you can return to tty7 (Control+Alt+F7), restart fluxbox (if needed) and at least you have antiX default menu and “terminal” entry will launch roxterm. You may have to change the fluxbox “theme” (style) as “Blueday” is missing.
Before returning to tty7 you will have to edit the fluxbox menu
nano ~/.fluxbox/menu
Jump to step 3a. (use x-terminal-emulator for the future, in case you change your terminal in the future, or use {roxterm} as the command).
Once you are happy with the changes, save (Control+X, look at the bottom part of the screen).
You will find the right-click menu nice, but it doesn’t really work. In step 3 and 4 may help if you are interested in it to work almost the same as default antiX.3. Customizing fluxbox is up to you, but I will give you some quick tips and fixes that may help you right now.
3a. Right-click menu is a mess. File manager, Web browser, Editor wont work. At least the terminal should work (f it doesn’t, move back to tty1 and use nano)
Edit ~/.fluxbox/menu with your favorite text editor and replace the commands. For example[exec] (Terminal) {x-terminal-emulator} [exec] (File Manager) {spacefm}All changes are up to you.
3b. All startup commands will have to be added to ~/.fluxbox/startup (~/.desktop-session/startup will not work anymore) and will require you to edit this file. For example, if you want to have SpaceFM control wallpaper and icons, add this to startup:#SpaceFM controls my desktop spacefm --desktop &3c. Change ~/.fluxbox/keys to replace keyboard shortcuts. For example (in my computer)
Mod4 t : ExecCommand x-terminal-emulator
Makes Windows+T launch terminal
Mod4 space :Rootmenu
Launches the right-click menu.
Etc.4. Making Applications menu repopulate will require you to install these packages:
sudo apt install desktop-defaults-base-antix xdg-utils python-gtk2 python-xdg desktop-session-antix
I may be missing some other package, but I think this is all you need for the applications menu to update (with “Update” menu entry and every time you install a new app, it will update the applications menu automatically).5. Installing antiX 19 default themes, fluxbox themes, wallpapers, etc.
sudo apt install arc-theme arc-evopro2-theme-antix artwork19-antix papirus-antix wallpaper-antix fluxbox-themes-antix
This should install all related antiX graphics. You may need to install lxappearance to be able to change your icon and gtk themes. Changing wallpaper would be done or inside SpaceFM (View > Preferences > Desktop > Wallpaper , tick it on and select the wallpaper) or with wallpaper-antix.6. Logout from the session/shutdown/restart from the default antiX fluxbox’s default menu will require you install desktop-session-antix
sudo apt install desktop-session-antix pm-utils python-gtk2
To logout you will have to copy the file /etc/skel/.desktop-session to your home folder7. You will need gksu for graphical applications that need root permissions with user account.
sudo apt install gksu
Then you need to launch
gksu-properties
and select sudo authentication mode. Now it should be similar to antiX 19 but still missing a lot of stuff. You will still need audio controller, volumeicon, etc.
This mini-guide may be incomplete. Please forgive any error.
I hope this helps.Update: fixed some stuff.

::Again, many thanks… I will follow-up with your suggestions and report back.
I’m highly motivated to learn how to properly do core installs and encouraged by the fact that, after my second try, I can boot into a primitive Fluxbox environment.

::Sorry for any errors in the commands. I was writing them down, I had not copied them, so probably some typos are present. I will install it on a Virtual machine and check step by step, as most was explained from memory.
AA BB: This gave ERROR message: Pkg roxterm not available..however the following pkg replaces it ‘roxterm-common’
so I installed roxtrm-commonm… no error messages but openssh-client roxterm-gtk3 or -gtk2 were recommendedYou are right. I just wrote it down wrongly. It should be roxterm-gtk2.
sudo apt install roxterm-gtk2AA BB: this gave Error /etc/skel/.fluxbox/ NO SUCH FILE or DIR
That means that desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix did not get installed
sudo apt install desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix
Once it installs it adds an entry to /etc/skel/ You should see it if you do
ls -a /etc/skel/
One of the folders should be .fluxboxNote: when I try to log out from the login-menu, all options including ‘logout’ are grayed out
On my last try I experienced the same. Probably missing politykit-1 or consolekit stuff. I am no expert with these kind of things. Maybe lightdm-gtk-greeter fixes this? No idea.
I will try the steps myself on a virtual machine and fix all typos.
Sorry for the inconveniences.antiX Live system enthusiast.

sudo apt install roxterm desktop-defaults-rox-antix desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix desktop-defaults-spacefm-antixMeaning, you need desktop-defaults-rox-antix and desktop-defaults-spacefm-antix
Anyway, this step is just to have everything exactly the same as in default antiX. this step is not necesary, only the “fluxbox” one, so that you can have a better menu.I will be updating the steps soon after testing stuff for myself. For example, to get the applications menu to work I did:
Making Applications menu repopulate will require you to install these packages:

This is the very same error we got at step 1 and you suggested I replace ‘roxterm’ with ‘roxterm-gtk2’ i.e. I installed roxterm-gtk2 earlier
At step #1, I also indicated that I went along with the antix-core suggestion and installed ‘roxterm-common’ so if you think I should remove roxterm-common let me knowIn short, it seems to me that we can safely ignore the above error message, since the roxterm-gtk2 install took care of things…Do you agree ??
I’ll stop at this point until you give me the ‘OK to continue’ because I don’t want to mess up whats been built so far

roxterm doesn’t exist anymore. I think it was replaced by the separate gtk2 and gtk3 versions.

::Error: Package roxterm not available …the following package replaces it…roxterm-common’
Again, Sorry for the mistake. As BobC says, it is roxterm-gtk2.
sudo apt install roxterm-gtk2 desktop-defaults-rox-antix desktop-defaults-fluxbox-antix desktop-defaults-spacefm-antixThis core experience is for you to learn, so don’t be afraid of experimenting. The mini-guide is a reference point for learning, and may contain some mistakes.
Once you reach installing and editing fluxbox menu, you can continue your experiments without the guide. The guide is an extremely limited set of instructions. Once you start experimenting installing other stuff you will go further and further away from the standard antiX system, customizing more and more stuff.Good luck with your adventure!
